In that same 1974, I met a fine gentleman who had graduated from the University of Ibadan around the time of the anguish that followed the killing of Kunle Adepeju.

He was then working with BP, where I had my first vacation-job experience.

That encounter became a friendship that has endured all these years. Along the way, it gave me the special privilege of becoming egbon, big brother, to his children.

Otunba Tunji Lawal-Solarin has, at every major turn in our national experience since those days, sought me out to ask what I thought was happening to Nigeria and where I believed the trends were taking us.

Often, after listening, he would open his mouth in amazement and say:

“Aburo, you said this would happen, and it has happened exactly as you said.”

I would remind him that I possessed no gift of prophecy.

I was simply paying attention.

I was observing the direction of things, connecting the dots and projecting where established trends were likely to lead.

There were times when he doubted my anxieties. Then events would unfold and he would return, almost bewildered:

“But how could you have seen that?”

The answer was always the same.

You do not need prophecy to anticipate the consequences of repeated choices.

Sometimes, you only need to watch carefully enough to recognise a pattern before everyone else is willing to see it.

Personal relationship count for much in my book. I was privileged to know Alhaji Bamanga Tukur well. The news of his passing diminished me and brings home the value of loyalty to me. Shortly before he became cabinet Secretary, minister, for Industry, I resigned my position as an executive in Industry. On appointment he and his Finance minister colleague, Prince Oladele Olashore, jointly and separately pressured me to withdraw my resignation. I told them I wanted to go and teach. Those were crucible days for the LBS. They asked if I knew of any person in Nigeria who resigned an executive position to go and be a teacher. I insisted it would give me much joy. They eventually gave up. Alhaji Tukur then sent his PA, Mrs Sanusi to deliver a retirement support gift to me saying he was worried Idealism was pushing me into self inflicted penury. It was sizable cash. He looked out for me. Knowing he was ailing, I called up his son Awwal to set up for me to visit him in Abuja. We enjoyed talking about life as a Nonagenarian. I promised to return but he passed before I could. I am truly diminished by his passing. I wish fortitude to the family

1. AKWA IBOM STATE (7th August, 2026): SUSPECTED CULTIST ARRESTED / THREE LIVE CARTRIDGES RECOVERED

✅ Police operatives intercepted and arrested a suspected cultist during stop-and-search operations along Abak Road, Uyo.
✅ Three live cartridges were recovered from the suspect.
✅ The suspect confessed that the ammunition was intended for use during a cult initiation ceremony.

✅ Police operatives arrested a suspected kidnapper during a manhunt operation tracing the footprints of kidnappers.
✅ The suspect confessed and identified another alleged accomplice.
✅ One motorcycle, bulletproof vest, face mask, cash and a broken mobile phone were recovered.

4. DELTA STATE (7th August, 2026): SUSPECTED KIDNAPPER ARRESTED / DAGGER RECOVERED

✅ Police detectives arrested a suspected member of a kidnapping syndicate terrorizing the Ologbo axis of Edo State.
✅ The suspect was arrested at Cattle Market, Oghara, in possession of a dagger.
✅ The suspect was positively identified by an alleged syndicate member already in police custody.

5. FCT POLICE COMMAND (6th August, 2026): ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED / EXHIBITS RECOVERED

✅ Police operatives responded to an armed robbery incident along Nyanya/Maraba Boundary Road and engaged in a hot chase.
✅ One suspected armed robber was arrested.

✅ The hoodlums abandoned a black Toyota Camry during the chase and escaped into a nearby bush.
✅ The vehicle was recovered intact.

7. FCT POLICE COMMAND (4th August, 2026): SUSPECT ARRESTED / STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERED

✅ Police operatives intercepted a stolen red Volkswagen Golf Wagon along the Dei-Dei–Zuba Expressway.
✅ One suspect was arrested and confessed to stealing the vehicle with two accomplices.
✅ Vehicle keys, charms, spanners, a brain box and a screwdriver were recovered.

8. FCT POLICE COMMAND (7th August, 2026): SUSPECT ARRESTED / MOB ACTION FOILED

✅ Police tactical teams rescued a suspected motorcycle snatcher from a mob at Danmarna Filling Station.
✅ The suspect was taken into police custody for investigation.
✅ Efforts are ongoing to arrest three fleeing members of the syndicate.

9. KATSINA STATE (7th August, 2026): ARMED ROBBERY FOILED / MOTORCYCLE RECOVERED
