Welles Crowther, a former Boston College lacrosse player who had a trademark red bandana, was working in New York on Sept. 11, 2001.
This is the story of how he led people to safety after terrorists struck the World Trade Center.
"After the game, Jackie Robinson came into our clubhouse and shook my hand.
Jackie said, 'You're a helluva ballplayer and you've got a great future.'
I thought that was a classy gesture, one I wasn't then capable of making.
I was a bad loser.
What meant even more was what Jackie told the press, 'Mantle beat us.
Mantle was the difference between the two teams.
They didn't miss DiMaggio.'
I have to admit, I became a Jackie Robinson fan on the spot.
And when I think of that World Series, his gesture is what comes to mind.
Here was a player who had without doubt suffered more abuse, more taunts and more hatred than any player in the history of the game.
And he had made a special effort to compliment and encourage a young white kid from Oklahoma."
Mickey Mantle.
Mattingly: 14 years, .307/.358/.471, 127 OPS+, 42.4 bWAR, 222 HR, 442 2B, 1,099 RBI, 2,153 hits, 6X All-Star, one MVP (should've been two), four top-10 MVP finishes, 7 GG, 3 Silver Sluggers. Won a batting title. Arguably the best player in baseball for a six-year period.

Today in 1983, George Brett is called out at Yankee Stadium after homering for having too much pine tar on his bat and promptly loses his goddamn mind.
@JackCurryYES@martinonyc An Epic Fail by Hal…
Because Hal refuses to end the lifetime scholarship of his GM he had to go above and beyond what LA offer money wise. Hal refused. He could never offer a better chance to win…
