He had never drawn a paycheck as a professional firefighter. On the morning of 11 September 2001 he became the man in the red bandana.

Welles Crowther was twenty-four and at his desk as a stock trader on the 104th floor of the South Tower when the attacks began. He did not leave the building and stay out. He tied the red bandana he always carried over his face and went back into the smoke three times.

People who lived that morning remembered a steady voice. He carried one injured woman on his back. He led groups down seventeen floors toward air they could breathe. He had trained as a volunteer with the fire company in Nyack, New York. He had never held a professional post.

Those who made it out later said he had helped as many as eighteen people reach safety. He was last seen going back up the stairs with firefighters. The South Tower fell at 9:59 a.m. Months afterward, survivors put a name to the stranger in the bandana.

Boston College keeps the story in its Red Bandana Game. In May 2026 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death. Twenty-four years old. Three returns into the fire. As many as eighteen lives. A piece of cloth that still means the choice to go back.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 28-year-old Marcy Borders was at her desk on the 81st floor of the North Tower.

It was her first month on the job.

When the plane hit, her boss told everyone to stay where they were. Marcy ignored him and ran for the stairs.

She reached the lobby of a nearby building just as the tower came down behind her. A photographer caught her standing there, frozen, covered head to toe in grey dust.

To the world, she became known as "The Dust Lady."

But she never wanted to be famous for it. She became afraid of planes and tall buildings. She started drinking and using drugs, lost custody of her kids, and spent years unable to work.

In 2011, she went to rehab and got clean.

Three years later, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Marcy always believed the disease came from the dust she breathed that morning. She died on August 24, 2015, at 42.

En una de las fotografías más conocidas del 11 de septiembre, un policía sostiene a una mujer que apenas puede mantenerse en pie.

Ella sobrevivió.

Él volvió a entrar.

El agente era Christopher Amoroso, de 29 años, miembro de la Policía de la Autoridad Portuaria de Nueva York y Nueva Jersey.

La mujer era Suman Dhamija. Había conseguido bajar desde una de las torres, pero padecía asma severa y el humo la estaba dejando sin aire.

Amoroso la encontró en medio del caos y la ayudó a salir.

La fotografía conserva ese instante.

Pero su historia no terminó allí.

Después de ponerla a salvo, Amoroso regresó al complejo para seguir ayudando en la evacuación.

Volvió una vez.

Y otra.

Hasta que ya no pudo salir.

Murió durante el colapso de la Torre Sur, mientras formaba parte de un grupo de agentes que continuaba trabajando dentro del World Trade Center.

Dejó una esposa y una hija de apenas 19 meses.

Durante años, la fotografía circuló sin que muchos supieran quién era la mujer ni qué había pasado con el policía que la sostenía.

Ella vivió para contarlo.

Él aparece congelado en el momento anterior a tomar una decisión que repetiría varias veces aquel día:

poner a otra persona delante de sí mismo.

En Suecia, una persona puede estar tomando un café, trabajando o paseando tranquilamente cuando su móvil recibe una alerta: alguien cercano acaba de sufrir un posible paro cardíaco.

Y entonces sale corriendo a ayudar.

El sistema se llama SMS-livräddare y conecta a los servicios de emergencia con miles de voluntarios formados en reanimación cardiopulmonar.

Cuando se detecta un posible paro cardíaco, las personas registradas que se encuentran cerca reciben la ubicación de la víctima. Algunas son enviadas directamente hasta ella para comenzar la RCP, mientras otras pueden dirigirse primero hacia un desfibrilador cercano.

Los estudios realizados en Suecia han demostrado que estos voluntarios consiguen llegar antes que los servicios profesionales y comenzar maniobras que pueden mantener con vida a la víctima hasta que llegue la ambulancia.En 2022, el sistema ya contaba con alrededor de 130.000 voluntarios registrados en varias regiones del país.

Last night @Ldn_Ambulance refused to send an ambulance to my house after I collapsed as the new boy on the other end of the line was reading off a screen. My heart beat was 150. My blood pressure was 175/120 and I had chest pains and could not breath. They new about my heart condition and still refused to send help.

A neighbor picked me up off the floor and drove me to hospital.

I was taken straight into resus where my blood pressure shot up to 185.

I was seconds away from cardiac arrest as doctors call surrounded me like a scene out of causality

I’m still in resus waiting for a bed in a ward.

I can not accept that I was refused help by an ambulance. This stupidity almost killled me.

Please pray urgently for the daughter of some friends of ours. She fell 12 feet yesterday at a trampoline park and broke her back in three places. She also has compressed discs and damaged ligaments in her neck. Her name is Lauren. She’s 9 💔
