I’d be thrilled if my elected representatives focused a bit more on how our own FARA laws are being misused & weaponized against American advocacy groups such as @HinduAmerican.

We’ve had a California Khalistani group threaten us with a legal FARA letter to Trump’s DOJ, and we’ve had American defamation laws prevent us from holding @IAMCouncil & other fringe groups accountable for fake FARA related allegations derived from @AJEnglish.

And how about fixing the rot in American universities evading their duty to report foreign funding -- as with the Bridge Initiative at Georgetown, built on Saudi money, that singles out Americans for attacks & suspicion?

Let’s get our own house in order before we grandstand over foreign laws.

अगर भारत की संसद विदेशी फंडिंग से जुड़े FCRA नियमों को और सख्त करने जा रही है, तो उससे अमेरिका के एक सांसद को इतनी बेचैनी क्यों हो रही है?

इसका जवाब तो वह स्वयं दे रहे हैं। उनका कहना है कि प्रस्तावित बदलाव ईसाई समुदाय पर सीधा हमला है और इससे सरकार को चर्चों तथा धार्मिक परोपकारी संस्थाओं पर नियंत्रण का अधिकार मिल जाएगा।

मतलब, एक तरह से वे यह स्वीकार कर रहे हैं कि NGO की आड़ में विदेशी फंडिंग का इस्तेमाल भारत में धर्मांतरण जैसी गतिविधियों के लिए किया जाता है? वरना इस बयान का क्या तुक है?

कुछ ही समय पहले अमेरिका के विदेश मंत्री भारत दौरे पर आए थे और उन्होंने अपनी यात्रा की शुरुआत कोलकाता स्थित मदर टेरेसा की संस्था से की थी। जबकि उस संस्था को लेकर अतीत में धर्मांतरण से जुड़े आरोप लगते रहे हैं। तभी से यह चर्चा थी कि अमेरिका FCRA नियमों में प्रस्तावित बदलाव को लेकर भारत पर दबाव बनाने की कोशिश करेगा।

अब इस अमेरिकी कांग्रेस सांसद के बयान से यह चर्चा और भी मजबूत होती दिखाई देती है।
