Japan and the Philippines are being simultaneously impacted by tropical cyclones as the sun rises over the West Pacific today.

Category 1 Typhoon Dolphin continues to lurk closer towards Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands while a weak Tropical Storm Kujira makes landfall in Luzon.

#DOLPHIN is tracking towards south #Japan

Typhoon Dolphin has curled into an enormous Pacific sea snake.

Contrary to previous model runs, her core hasn’t burst into an absurdly large truck tire yet, thanks to rivulets of dry air repeatedly vaporizing any prospective eyewall suitors. This has kept the eye small despite the sprawled-out, aging nature of the surrounding circulation.

Though further weakening is the most likely path forward, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Dolphin’s core tries to reorganize and slightly restrengthen when it hits a pocket of higher OHC before landfall in Okinawa, Japan. Something to watch here over the next 24 hours.

Forests are more than just wood and are important for the water balance. The groundwater beneath a forest is clean, oxygen-rich and excellent for producing drinking water. That is why forests are particularly often also water protection areas. 💚🌿☘️🌱🌲🌳🍀💚

Category 3 Typhoon Dolphin is truly a bizarre-looking storm at this point.

Now on her way to Okinawa after landfalling in the Iwo Jima islands, her eyewall has become the small, 115 MPH (185 kph) nucleus to a gargantuan broader circulation that spans 600 miles (965 km) across. A swirling moat of dry air is preventing the onset of another self-destructive EWRC.

While gradual weakening is once again the forecast going forward, Dolphin has proved herself to be an unpredictable system. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens next.
