@ErikFossing@pdegrauwe Isn’t the (sad) answer to your question Erikthat Europe’s policymakers lack the courage to speak up and take necessary action? Just like with Trump’s tariffs they chose to celebrate an agreement that saw the US raise tariffs on European exports and the EU do nothing in response
1. I cannot believe this discourse is still ongoing.
2. I cannot believe how stupid it has become.
3. The football giant (not poor little global south underdog), reigning champion, best-player-of-all-time-haver, and one of the tournament favourites has a football culture well-known to be chauvinistic and violent, and it almost certainly was the beneficiary of favourable officiating based on the statistics alone. If you don’t know this you don’t know anything about football.
4. The reasons for the officiating bias might be quite banal not some grand conspiracy.
5. Every narrative that strays too far beyond this is some absurd form of projection that shows the outsized influence of amplified social media dreck and how every single topic under the sun becomes a reservoir for broader political discontents, however tenuously related.
@Alea_@pdegrauwe How do you mean? If say 1-year or 2-year EUR rates reflected an expectation of ECB delivering 75bps of hikes in coming months, and instead the ECB delivered no hikes then… wouldn’t these rates fall once expectations got reset?
By begging for a trade deal, Britain undermines attempts to isolate the US. It makes the US stronger and the rest of the world weaker. Britain hands Trump a stick to beat us all with, including Britain. How foolish. https://t.co/KzkQSGXJmW via @ft
Hopefully this will be our Smoot-Hawley, not in the sense of leading to a massive economic contraction, which obviously we don't want, but in proving to anyone who can be persuaded by information the costliness of tariffs for several generations.
Comparing apples and oranges, in very bad faith. The EU budget is only for EU-competence programs and is a tiny fraction of the combined national budgets of EU member states. €118 billion (over three years) is not even 0.2% of the EU’s annual GDP. (Edited to correct the math.)
They're awesome! They emphasize uncertainty while also forcing people to be accountable for their BS. They help people to make planning decisions. They summarize information efficiently. They promote probabilistic literacy. They're fun. And they're incredibly popular.
I think the Fed should cut by 50 bp. I feel we overanalyze each data point for what it means on timing & size of rate move rather than ask what *level* of rates is appropriate. I think it's obvious the right level is well below where we are now. My reasons ... https://t.co/IXOGnF9SH5
The narrative that the Fed is going to respond with an emergency policy move to what we've seen so far is just, like, a Twitter thing.
We are very far from an inter-meeting rate cut, let alone any lending/market intervention.
