‘The Serpent in the Grove’ by Jamir Nazir is a story set in rural Trinidad about a struggling farmer, a silenced young wife and a grove that seems to remember what others try to bury.
Awarded the Caribbean regional winner title for its lyrical precision and haunting atmosphere, the story stood out for the confidence and restraint of its voice.

There are Internet takes I see where quoting isn't enough to bash the OP. I need a teleprotation button so I can appear in your house, lock the door and then you explain yourself face to face with a bleeding jaw.
Sometimes I randomly think about all the great opportunities Christians miss because of "strange" dreams. What do you mean you cancelled a flight because you dreamt of a red cloth and concluded it means you're going to bleed?
The Thing Around Your Neck is up there as one of my favourite short story collections, but you see The Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth? Whew! Two of the greatest books ever released to the world.
The Third and Final Continent and A Choice of Accommodations are two short stories from those collections that I think everyone should read. There are writers of short stories and then there is Lahiri, a God!
I reviewed Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's The Thing Around Your Neck over 15 years ago...
"I hate to say this, but when it comes to short stories, Adichie is no Jhumpa Lahiri. Where Lahiri offers crisp freshly minted prose in every piece of her latest short story collection Unaccustomed Earth, Adichie is uneven, delivering stories that range from the stodgy (The American Embassy) to the truly inspiring (The Headstrong Historian). What emphasizes the unevenness of Adichie’s stories is that the book is actually a compilation of several past works, an archival of sorts. All in all, This Thing Around Your Neck is really about our shared injustice colluding to distort our history. This book is a humanized narrative that is deeply affective – for the most part. Enjoy the book; it is life staring at you."
