It's remarkable that a woman can complain about free speech in Britain while supporting execution for blasphemy in Saudi Arabia.
This might be one of those paradox of tolerance situations.
"The beatings will continue until morale improves."
@WilliamClouston and I recently discussed how refusing to manage immigration is a process of demoralisation. Governing for โthe global goodโ is not morally superior. Itโs a vanity for people who have forgotten what democracy is.
A government that serves in the national interest is the only way forward for our country. Nothing - from the economy to the border to how we respond to AI - will improve until we have such a government.
And it will feel strange. Because we haven't had one in decades.
Where is this guy?
We've had the US military withdrawal from British soil, the Green Party going full Nazi, warnings of a plague outbreak in Russia, and the ongoing disastrous immigration issues........
Where the fuck is he?
Europe is finding itself sandwiched from all sides when it comes to refined products โ diesel in particular (some of the damage is due to the US-Iran war; some is due to Ukraine-Russia; some is due to China, and a lot is self-inflicted). Policy response: Head in the sand.
@Miatsf and @mgshanks need to see this. The plans for GB are the same.... Massive overbuild of the grid to accommodate the intermittency of wind and solar the cost of which is added to our bills
The post quotes Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy in Germany addressing the German Parliament...
"For too long, the production costs of wind and photovoltaics from the plant have been declared as the sole costs of the energy transition.
"The cost of the overall system was lost sight of, redispatch, nets and secured performance were โdiscentively ignoredโ.
"A power system must bring together 8,760 hours a year of generation and consumption and also function without wind and solar.
"In addition to the existing infrastructure of controllable power plants, we are building a weather-dependent generation structure without being able to do without secured power.
"In addition, there are grids, storage, control energy, redispatch and reserve. The less frequent backup power plants run, the fewer operating hours their fixed costs bear.
"There are no two parallel infrastructures for the price of one."
Economic reality: moving to a grid based on wind and solar is very very expensive and policymakers have ignored many of the costs because they want to think renewables are cheap. They're not

Four years ago, The Guardian claimed that Spain and Portugal are becoming too dry thanks to anthropogenic climate change.
However, after the devastating floods in fall 2024, The Guardian said that Spain is becoming too wet because of climate change.
The observational data, however, tell a different story. A recent study published in Nature in March 2025 analyzed long-term rainfall data in the Mediterranean and found that no statistically significant long-term trends exist in the whole.

Interestingly, in Spain, there has been little trend in rainfall since 1871. However, if the analysis starts in 1951, there is a significant decrease (p <0.05), while starting in 1981 yields a statistically significant increase (p <0.05).
This just goes to show that people (like the writers at The Guardian) can manipulate data to get a desired trend to suit a specific narrative.
These people have devoted their careers to destroying the beautiful world you grew up in, which they then pretend was a fantasy all along. The demoralisation is precisely the point
A large tree trunk has been uncovered beneath a glacier in the Alps, dated to around 6,000 years ago.
The species is Swiss stone pine.
Today, trees of that type cannot grow at that altitude because it is far too cold.
This means that when that tree was alive, the climate there had to be warmer than today.
6,000 years ago aligns with the Holocene climate optimum, a time when temperatures were far higher than now, even with far less atmospheric CO2.
Earth's climate is cyclical and Mother Nature self-regulates.
Narratives of doom serve political aims, not reality.
It's depressing that time and again policymakers spout nonsense about gas markets and then use these misconceptions as the basis for policy
My new report sets out in detail how gas markets actually work and why prices are not "global"
Once you understand that there's not even a single European price never mind a single global price, and that UK gas prices now tend to be lower than European ones, it becomes obvious that we need to maximise UKCS production
Yet we use pessimistic projections based on a highly hostile fiscal and regulatory landscape as "proof" the UKCS is on its last legs and is becoming irrelevant
Alternative forecasts from @OEUK_ show significant upside potential if a more encouraging regime was adopted - the geology is the same but the economic context can be changed
The first of my six recommendations is to fix the broken understanding of how the gas market actually works - do this and much of the rest becomes pretty clear

๐ฆSomeone is buying Japanese used books by the ton. Not novels or comics. Philosophy, history, medical law, Edo-period cultural texts. Multiple buyer accounts all ship to one logistics center in Okayama Prefecture that won't answer questions. Export records show over 50 tons, roughly 100,000 volumes, shipped to the US since last year. No buyer has been identified.
Separately, court documents confirmed Anthropic's "Project Panama" bought millions of books in the US, cut the spines off, scanned them, and shredded the originals. An internal memo said the goal was to "destructively scan all the books in the world." Similar operations have been reported across Europe.
My Take
Anthropic's US book operation came out in court filings earlier this year. Project Panama. Millions of books, cut the spines off, scanned, shredded. Their VP chose the codename so nobody outside the company would find out. That story broke and apparently the same operation just moved to Japan. Anonymous buyer accounts, a warehouse in Okayama that won't take questions, and 100,000 volumes of specialized academic texts that nobody buys to resell.
I don't know how you build a trillion-dollar industry on material you had to acquire in secret through middlemen because you knew the public would object. Authors spent years on those books and now they're fed through a scanner and thrown away so a chatbot can sound smarter. If the data was free to use, they wouldn't need codenames and anonymous warehouses. The lawsuits over who owns this material have barely begun and I think the copyright exposure across the whole AI industry is enormous. Anthropic's internal memo said the goal was every book in the world, which describes the foundation of the product.

Thalidomide maimed and killed thousands of babies.
The underlying issue was that doctors thought they were giving one thing but it turned out they were giving another - a left handed version or a right handed version of the same molecule.
Drug safety was transformed afterwards but...
The same is true with FOLIC ACID.
They think they are giving folate (natural and good for us) but they are giving an oxidised form that is unnatural and comes with an array of adverse effects.
Even a low risk of a serious side effect is a huge problem when a drug is given to an entire population.

When we look at an oak, a sequoia, or a balsa tree in the Amazon rainforest, we're looking at solidified carbon and oxygen.
Trees do not obtain structural mass from the soil; it comes out of thin air. Plants are built almost entirely from atmospheric gasesโliving, complex architectures of carbon, oxygen and sunlight. No wonder that as children, we hug them, play and climb in them, or wander through their woods, hearing them sighing in the wind.
Around 90% to 95% of a tree's dry weight is carbon and oxygen, pulled directly from atmospheric carbon dioxide. Most people assume trees draw their body from the earth, yet the soil volume beneath a canopy remains unchanged as a sapling matures into a giant.
Roots do not consume dirt to build branches; large trees leave no gaping holes in the ground. Instead, the root network is a mechanical anchor to hold the heavy tree structure upright, while absorbing water and a tiny fraction of soil mineralsโnitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are their biological multivitamins, accounting for less than 5% of final dry mass.
Through photosynthesis, sunlight breaks apart carbon dioxide and water molecules. The plant releases oxygen back into the atmosphere and chains the remaining carbon and oxygen into glucose molecules, forming complex structural polymers like cellulose and lignin.
Across the globe, an estimated 3 trillion trees hold roughly 500 billion cubic meters of wood. Every forest on Earth is in reality solidified atmosphereโhundreds of billions of tons of air trapped, structured and given physical form by living plants.
Mankind owes its survival to these friendly giants of the natural world.
