What an absolute honour. However, this award is for a far greater team, without whom this work would not have been possible. So THANK YOU @SciMatty @Rachel_Coppock @SarahENelms @ZaraBotterell @BrendanGodley @E_StevensonBG@cdwalkinshaw@EmilyDuncan34@madiesteer et al 🙏 ☺️
@AmieLusher@Win_OpenData@GrayLabUCR And then there was those of us that are lucky enough to sift through crude sewage for microplastics 😂. Although some oceanic plankton samples smelt worse!
When I started my PhD I was looking forward to getting to grips with using R. Learning from a book and YouTube in my spare room by myself with very poor internet isn’t quite what I was hoping for. 🤯😭🤪 Procrastination levels are high right now. #lockdown
@ScienceSAL@UKRI_News@UKRI_CEO Thats exactly the part I'd like explained too.... I've been told/read directly from UKRI that mid term students have to adjust their project as costed extensions unlikely and I need to adjust NOW not in the future IF i can ever win an extension.
@T_F_Johnson My old house has electric only heating and to work from home is costing £6 a day in heating (for one room!). It’s unaffordable yet the university is allowed to keep my bench fees money to heat their empty buildings! Plus I can’t access any of the usual NERC courses I’d like! 🤯🤦♀️
@jeremycorbyn Working broadband would be a start for rural properties! Don’t mind paying but more than 3mb is an absolute necessity now! Our only option is £100 per month satellite broadband - a teacher and PhD student cannot afford that yet we also can’t work from home! 🤯
Working from home with a permanent intermittent broadband fault is so frustrating! Partner can’t teach his college students & I struggle with PhD write up yet @bt_uk won’t weaver the £210 cancellation fee to allow us to get 4g broadband instead! @BBCSpotlight@scottmann4NC help!
Choose your clothing wisely. Alternatives to plastic fibres also have their issues. China's tainted cotton - New evidence of forced labour at the heart of the global fashion industry. https://t.co/tKYjqSs5gs via @BBCNews#microplastics
It’s just occurred to me that for the last 5 yrs Chemistry has played a big part in my published masters paper & now my PhD. My A Level chemistry teacher once asked me “what’s it like being in a class where everyone else is so brainy”. Well.... 👩🎓🔬🥼#hownottoteach#misguided
@Amanda_Manta Unfortunately this is one odd ball sample left for analysis. I think a drain cleaner unblocked at fat burg or something! So no spare sample... just the real one! 😅😬
@Amanda_Manta My samples have been through Fenton’s and are well digested but there are fatty “globules” left floating on the surface which means when I filter them (10um) I can’t see microplastics in amongst it. I just need to get rid of the lipids. However I suspect it’s not just lipids 🤦♀️😭
This is the magical moment that a beaver was released into a specially designed re-wilding enclosure near Poole Farm in Plymouth.
It’s all part of the Green Minds project, a council initiative focussed on re-wilding to encourage more nature and wildlife.

Recycled or not these fibres go through waste water treatment and out into the environment in scary numbers. Wear less plastic is the only answer at the moment. 👌🌊
Clothing from recycled bottles?
So many jumping for joy as their microfibre-shedding fleece is made from old PET water bottles (!). If you want to seriously protect the environment, drink tap water and wear #plantbased clothing. @TCLaboratory
