I can’t help but suspect that Nicky Hager’s ultimate problem is that he struggles to accept the reality that large swathes of the NZ public don’t support the progressive agenda. Blaming this on some shadow conspiracy of mass manipulation from nefarious figures on the centre right of politics is a coping mechanism, a way to deny the fact that your ideology is not popular - ‘it can’t be our ideology, because that’s perfect - it must be secret mind control of the population!’

Ironically, it’s also a fear-based tool of voter manipulation - a way to try and scare people not to support the right, lest they be accused of being part of a villainous conspiracy to subvert or destroy their own nation. When you do this, you become the very thing you are accusing others of. #nzpol

Another day, another story showing that the Public Service views the OIA as something to be avoided as much as possible. Ministers passing the buck is no longer good enough. Urgent overhaul of the OIA is needed.

Remember, the Public Service, despite its name, does not work for us. It works for Ministers. Therefore, the information it generates is not ours; it is theirs. The public of NZ having access to it via the OIA is a significant inconvenience to the Public Service, and while they pay it deference publicly, they are contemptuous of it in practice.

The Taxpayers’ Union is backing Labour’s call for a Public Service Commission investigation into allegations that Ministry of Education staff were told to avoid putting information in writing because it could be requested under the Official Information Act.

Taxpayers’ Union Investigative Lead, Rhys Hurley, said:

“Labour is bang on to demand an investigation into the Ministry of Education. If officials are being told to keep things out of writing because they could be released under the OIA, taxpayers deserve to know how far that practice goes.

“But this investigation cannot begin and end at the Ministry of Education. The Public Service Commission must establish whether this is happening across the entire public service.”

“The former Chief Ombudsman warned last year that suggestions officials and ministers keep things off the written record to avoid accountability were ‘deeply troubling’."

“Labour has identified a serious issue. Now the Commission needs to establish whether this is an isolated incident is a part of a wider culture that strikes at the heart of open government.”
