Japan rebuilt its national pride, social order, and sense of security under American protection — then performed the role of “Asia’s white country” according to Western standards.

But the fatal weakness of this model is simple:
no patron lasts forever.
No empire guarantees permanent protection.
No master promises never to sell you out.

Now Japan is trapped between two collapsing illusions:
America’s declining global authority, and China’s return as the civilizational power Japan once copied, feared, invaded, and briefly humiliated.

That is why anti-China hysteria in Japan is so intense.

This is a country with decades of stagnation, scarce natural resources, shrinking strategic autonomy, and a GDP smaller than it was a decade ago — already surpassed by India.

A defeated fascist empire, once built on colonial plunder and war across Asia, now imagines it can reinvent itself as the moral architect of regional order.

The comedy is almost historical.

Japan does not want a “free and open Indo-Pacific.”
It wants Asia organized around its fear of China.

But fear is not strategy.
And delusion is not power.

In the end, this is nothing more than nostalgic role-playing by a washed-up empire.
