Honouring Our Heroines This Mashujaa Day
As Mashujaa Day approaches, we take a moment to remember and celebrate the brave women who rose up against the colonial injustice and were part of Kenyaβs struggle for freedom. The fight for independence came at a heavy cost; more than a million Kenyans were forced from their homes by British forces. Yet, even in the face of terror and oppression, our heroines rose to defend their people and their land.
Muthoni wa Kirima stands tall among them, a fearless Mau Mau fighter whose courage in the forests became a symbol of defiance and hope. Alongside her, Ann Njogu, Jacinta Kabika, Wambui Otieno, and Hannah Wanjiru among others, played powerful roles in the resistance, refusing to be silenced.
Their bravery reminds us that women were a key part of shaping Kenya's history.
We also remember Sarah Sarai, who boldly confronted racial segregation and fought for equality when doing so was dangerous but necessary.
We honour the countless others whose names we may never know, for their sacrifice, courage, and love for Kenya.
Their courage continues to inspire us to keep working and building a nation that truly values justice, equity, inclusiveness and dignityΒ forΒ all.
