🚨 A BRCA report can be “negative”… and still miss a BRCA mutation. 👀

Here’s why:

Routine BRCA sequencing is great at finding small spelling mistakes in the gene. 🧬
But sometimes the problem is much bigger:

❌ a whole exon/chunk of BRCA1 or BRCA2 is missing
❌ or an extra chunk is duplicated

That won’t always show up on routine sequencing.

This is where reflex MLPA matters.

Think of it like this 👇
Sequencing checks for typos in the BRCA book 📖
MLPA checks whether entire pages are missing or copied twice

So in a patient with:
▪️ strong family history
▪️ young breast cancer / TNBC / ovarian cancer
▪️ high suspicion of hereditary cancer

…a “negative” BRCA sequencing report may still be incomplete.

👉 Reflex MLPA helps detect large BRCA1/2 deletions or duplications that sequencing can miss.

Take-home

A complete BRCA test should not just ask “Is there a typo?”
It should also ask: “Is part of the book missing?”

That’s why reflex MLPA can sometimes turn a “negative” BRCA report into the real diagnosis. 🧬
