🌍🏆 First Ever FIFA World Cup (1930)
📅 The inaugural FIFA World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay.
📨 There were no qualifying rounds. Instead, FIFA invited national teams directly to take part in the tournament.
🌎 A total of 13 teams accepted the invitation:
🇺🇾 Uruguay (hosts)
🇦🇷 Argentina
🇧🇷 Brazil
🇧🇴 Bolivia
🇨🇱 Chile
🇵🇾 Paraguay
🇵🇪 Peru
🇺🇸 United States
🇲🇽 Mexico
🇧🇪 Belgium
🇫🇷 France
🇷🇴 Romania
🇷🇸 Yugoslavia
🚢 Many European teams declined because of the long and expensive sea voyage across the Atlantic. The four European participants traveled together by ship, the Conte Verde, to Uruguay.
🏆 Since the 1934 FIFA World Cup, every edition has featured qualifying tournaments (except for the host nation—and, from 1938 to 2002, the defending champions also qualified automatically).
💡 Interesting historical note: The 1930 World Cup remains the only FIFA World Cup in history where every participating team qualified solely by invitation.

𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗬 in 1954, Brazil faced Hungary in the World Cup quarter-final. It would become known as the Battle of Berne. One of the most infamous matches in World Cup history.
Standing in Brazil’s way was the greatest national team the game has ever seen. It was going to be an enormous challenge.
Played in heavy rain, a slippery pitch and heavy ball made conditions incredibly difficult.
Hungary struck first after just four minutes. Hidegkuti reacted quickest inside the box and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Just three minutes later, Sándor Kocsis doubled the lead with a superb header.
Brazil responded brilliantly. On 18 minutes they won a penalty, calmly converted by Djalma Santos to make it 2–1. Brazil went into half-time just a goal behind.
Hungary began the second half on top and were awarded a penalty within 15 minutes, converted by Lantos. The decision resulted in chaos. Brazilian journalists and officials invaded the pitch in protest before police escorted them off. From that moment, the match descended into violent fouls.
Brazil refused to surrender. Julinho cut inside from the right and drilled a great strike from outside the box into the bottom corner to make it 3–2.
The temperature continued to heat up. Nilton Santos and Humberto were both sent off for Brazil, while Hungary’s József Bozsik was also dismissed as fighting erupted.
With two minutes remaining, the great Kocsis finally settled the tie, his swerving long range effort deceiving Castilho. 4–2 Hungary.
But the violence did not stop at the final whistle. Players, coaches, photographers, officials and even supporters became involved in brawls in the tunnel and dressing-room.
In total, the referee awarded 42 free-kicks, two penalties and three red cards in one of the most chaotic matches ever.
English referee Arthur Ellis later said:
“I thought it was going to be the greatest game I’d ever see. I was on top of the world… but they behaved like animals. It was a disgrace.”
Hungary manager Gusztáv Sebes, who required four stitches to his face after the fighting, summed it up:
“This was a battle; a brutal, savage match. At the end we had won 4–2 but it wasn’t over yet. Brazilian photographers and fans flooded onto the pitch. Players clashed in the tunnel and a small war broke out in the corridor to the dressing rooms.”
