Shah Mahmood Qureshi was acquitted today in yet another case (FIR No. 1570/2023). Despite securing acquittals and bail in around 50 cases across Punjab and Islamabad over the past three years, he remains incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat Jail because two pending bail applications before the ATC Lahore have yet to be decided.

The case for bail is compelling on multiple grounds: he has already been acquitted in several cases involving similar allegations, granted bail in other comparable matters, is a senior citizen, and has well-documented medical concerns.

Prolonged delays in deciding bail applications undermine the very purpose of bail jurisprudence.

Dr Yasmin Rashid (who faced yet another unjustified conviction today) asked me, as their lawyer, to raise the question that how will Courts justify SMQ’s unlawful imprisonment for these three long years.

میرے گھر میں جو خاتون کام کرتی ہیں، انہوں نے پچھلے سال اپنے گھر سے بجلی کٹوا دی تھی کیونکہ بل ادا کرنے کی ہمت نہیں تھی۔ پورا سال اس خاندان نے بغیر بجلی کے گزارا کیا۔ اس سال انہوں نے لوگوں کی مدد سے ایک سولر پلیٹ لگائی، ایک لائٹ اور پنکھا خریدا۔ ان کی خو��ی دیکھنے سے تعلق رکھتی تھی۔ آج صبح ہی میں نے ان کے پنکھے کی ویڈیو دیکھی اور آج شام کو پتا چلا کہ اب سولر لگانے کے لیے NEPRA سے لائسنس لینا ضروری ہے، جیسے آپ اسلحے کے لیے لیتے ہیں۔ یعنی سولر بھی اس حکومت کے لیے اسلحے سے کم نہیں۔

میرا اتنا دل دکھا کہ ہمارے گھروں میں جو سولر ہیں وہ انویسٹمنٹ تو یہ لوگ ڈبو ہی چکے ہیں، لیکن ایک غریب بھی اب NEPRA سے لائسنس لے گا اور ساری زندگی اس کی فیسیں ادا کرے گا۔ یہ ظالم کسی انسان کو ملک میں زندگی گزارتا نہیں دیکھ سکتے، اور اگر ان کی کسی پالیسی پر اعتراض کرو تو آپ کو غداری کے سرٹیفکیٹ بانٹے جاتے ہیں۔
