Interviewer: Welcome to everyone watching and everyone here at IG Arena. This is Aonishiki, celebrating his third championship. Congratulations!
Aonishiki: Thank you very much. (He bows to all four sides of the arena as the crowd applauds.)

Interviewer: You came through an incredible championship playoff. How are you feeling right now?
Aonishiki: I just feel like I gave it everything I had.

Interviewer: You've won the championship at the tournament where you secured your return to the rank of ozeki. How do you feel about that?
Aonishiki: After I got injured and had to sit out, it was certain that I was going to be demoted from ozeki. My stablemaster told me, "Next tournament, don't just aim for ten wins—aim for the championship." I'm really happy that I was able to win it here. (Applause.)

Interviewer: You lost in the regulation bout, then went into the playoff. What was on your mind going into it?
Aonishiki: I just wanted to give everything I had and leave no regrets. That's how I approached it.

Interviewer: Looking back at those two playoff bouts, what do you think led to your victories?
Aonishiki: I stayed patient and was able to wrestle my own style of sumo. I think that was the biggest reason for the result. (Applause.)

Interviewer: This was your first tournament after returning from an absence due to injury, and you've gone through experiences unlike anything before. What do you think led to this result?
Aonishiki: After the injury, I dropped all the way to Sekiwake. More than anything, I felt frustrated. I strongly believed that I wasn't someone whose career was going to end there. (Applause.)

Interviewer: You've said you wanted to make use of everything you've experienced. What experiences proved most valuable?
Aonishiki: Last year, here at IG Arena, I came up just one step short. This year, I wanted to show the fans in Nagoya exciting sumo, and that's the mindset I brought into the tournament. (Applause.)

Interviewer: Now that the fifteen days are over, how was your physical condition?
Aonishiki: My body moved better than I expected, so I'm glad about that.

Interviewer: Next tournament you'll be back at the rank of ozeki. What kind of sumo do you want to wrestle going forward?

Aonishiki did it again. For the third time in his young career, the Ukrainian rikishi wins the Emperor's Cup, and if the first was the title to make himself known and the second that of confirmation, this is that of rebirth.
At the beginning of these two weeks, with great uncertainty about his physical condition, Aonishiki needed 10 victories to regain Ozeki's rank. Well he did even better, sweeping away all doubts, reaching the record figure of 12-3, the third time in his 9 Makuuchi basho career, overcoming the best rikishi of the moment and above all overcoming himself, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and resistance to pain.

There was no better way to end the 2026 Nagoya Basho, with a three-way play-off between the most consistent rikishi of these two weeks: Mongolian ozeki Kirishima, Japanese sekiwake Atamifuji, and the returning ozeki Aonishiki. (The last one was in January 2025 between Hoshoryu, Kinbozan, and Oho.) After his defeat to Atamifuji in the regular match, Aonihiski did well to reset his mind and return to the dohyo focused to face the same opponent again. This time, his legs moved much better, and his solid left front grip allowed him to get the better of the Japanese giant.
But the real masterpiece came in the final match of the tournament, the Ukrainian's 17th overall in the last two weeks: a gem he crafted to overcome the technical Kirishima, using leverage with his left leg to knock him off balance.

In addition to the basho victory, there is also that of the Ginō-shō, Technique Prize, the fourth of his career, confirming the high level of sumo he shows on the dohyo and the variety of moves with which he manages to win matches, including today's one after his loss in the regular match.

Aonishiki wasn't able to get into his preferred position, but he stayed composed. Unable to grab the front of the belt with his left hand, he allowed Takerufuji to press chest-to-chest. It was a dangerous position, but just as his opponent tried to surge forward, Aonishiki skillfully shifted his body weight to force him down. It was a win earned through patience. Normally, a wrestler might rush forward or try too many things, but he dug in, held firm, and instead forced his opponent to make a move. That was the winning factor.

Entering the final stretch of the tournament, he appears to have found his composure, and the condition of his leg seems to be improving day by day. He should be in top condition for the final day. Now on the brink of taking the championship title, he faces Atamifuji. To neutralize his opponent's weight, can he execute an early, aggressive offense? That will be the key.

Atamifuji exuded fighting spirit and pressure with his entire large frame, forcing Shishi into taking a passive approach. That is both his virtue and his strength. His momentum is not to be underestimated.

If it comes down to a playoff (tomoe-sen), Kirishima will also have a chance. This final day has truly become something to look forward to.

Aonishiki, nursing an injured left ankle, enters the final day as the sole leader in the championship race. Watching him after his bout, he hardly seems able to walk while using his ankle properly. Yet, one must bow in respect to his sheer mental strength, enduring that pain to push forward with straightforward sumo.

In his match against Takerufuji, he got a left-inside grip and brought his chest close. Although he was pushed back, he circled to his right while executing an underarm throw, ultimately bringing his opponent down with a push-down.

On the other hand, Takerufuji started off well by grabbing an overhand grip with his right hand first, but unfortunately, the grip was too deep. As a result, his upper body leaned too far forward, losing stability in his lower half and allowing his opponent to swing him around. Looking at it another way, it simply means Aonishiki executed his sumo remarkably well.

With this, on Senshuraku he faces a high-stakes showdown for the Emperor's Cup against Atamifuji, who trails by one win. A victory seals the championship beyond a doubt, but a loss leaves open the possibility of a three-way playoff involving Atamifuji and Kirishima.

Given the condition of his left ankle, he will want to settle the bout in the regulation match) at all costs. For Aonishiki, whether he gets a left-inside grip or grabs the belt, he needs to enter his opponent's chest and charge forward immediately without a moment's delay. If they lock up and come to a halt, his opponent's weight will bear down, putting a heavy burden on that left ankle.

Conversely, Atamifuji will likely want to get a grip on either the left or right side and wrap his arms around to clamp down. Judging by his match against Shishi today, the momentum is on Atamifuji's side. However, head-to-head records favor Aonishiki, who holds 4 wins to 1 loss. While a prolonged bout will be tough on Aonishiki, I hope to see a great match as he wrings out every last drop of his strength.

Kirishima, who is aiming for promotion to Yokozuna, secured a crucial victory. Having lost all 10 of his previous encounters against Onosato, a tough fight was expected prior to the bout, but he navigated the obstacle with a well-thought-out game plan.

Wary of the Yokozuna’s right-hand inside grip, Kirishima kept his left side tight at the initial charge . He clamped down on Onosato’s right arm as he reached inside, pivoted to the side, and threw him to the ring floor.

To an extent, he was aided by a careless effort from the Yokozuna.

Onosato quickly showed his right hand upon contact, but his subsequent attack lacked precision. Normally, he should have driven forward toward the side of his inside grip; instead, he charged straight ahead on momentum alone, allowing Kirishima to circle around to his right. This pushed Onosato's left hand out of reach, forcing him to fight with only his right hand. Even a formidable Yokozuna cannot overpower an Ozeki under those conditions. While Onosato’s forcing-out technique when securing a right-hand grip is flawless, attempting to push forward without it leaves him easily off-balance.

With Aonishiki’s defeat, Kirishima moves back into a tie for the lead in the tournament title race. It remains an intense, chaotic battle, with four wrestlers sitting at two losses and three at three losses. Aonishiki is dealing with trouble in his left ankle, and in today's bout against Kotoshoho, he was unable to execute his trademark tenacious style of staying low and clinging to his opponent.

Looking at the contenders with three losses or fewer, Kirishima is on the shortest path to victory in terms of both rank and current form. However, as fatigue reaches its peak over the final three days starting from Day 13, anything can happen. For Kirishima to capture the Yokozuna rope, a high-caliber championship victory is required. Winning at least 12 bouts is an absolute requirement. The real battle begins here.

It is an interesting phenomenon that the worse your condition is, the better you might actually perform. Of course, the reverse can also happen, but when you carry concern about a part of your body, your options become limited, which simplifies your movements. Consequently, your focus becomes razor-sharp, allowing you to wrestle with bold conviction.

Having now secured his return to the Ozeki rank, he must feel a immense sense of mental relief. Although he has also taken sole possession of the lead in the championship race, the lingering worry over his left ankle might actually work in his favor—keeping distractions at bay and making it easier to stay locked in on the bout right in front of him. Stepping onto the dohyo with that mindset will surely give him the wind at his back.

Sekiwake Aonishiki secured his 10th win by forcing out M2 Gonoyama with a yorikiri, officially guaranteeing his return to the Ozeki rank for the upcoming tournament.

Right from the initial charge, Aonishiki stayed low, driving in with his left foot to secure a deep grip on Gonoyama’s belt. Using his left arm as a lifeline, he countered his opponent’s thrusts, immediately threw him off-balance with an dashinage, switched positions, and marched him out of the ring.

"I focused on giving it my absolute all and didn't let my leg bother me," Aonishiki reflected.

Despite entering the tournament with a left ankle injury suffered prior to last basho—and further injuring his left big toe on Day 8—he mounted a formidable 7-fight winning streak starting on Day 9, which included back-to-back victories over Yokozuna Onosato and Hoshoryu.

Savoring his 10th victory quietly, Aonishiki admitted the wait had taken a toll:

"I’ve never really felt happy just winning 10 bouts before, but this time feels special. I’m genuinely happy. From yesterday to today felt so long. I tried not to think about it, but it was definitely on my mind. Thinking about useless things is kind of my specialty. I kept moving forward despite the anxiety and fear."

Having sat out his first-ever tournament last basho, he gained a fresh perspective on his craft:

"A rikishi has to be on the dohyo. That thrill is almost addictive. No matter what else I do, winning on the ring gives me the absolute greatest joy."

Under current kadoban regulations (introduced in the July 1969 Nagoya Tournament), an Ozeki who suffers two consecutive losing records is demoted to Sekiwake, but can immediately regain the rank by scoring 10 or more wins in the following basho.

Aonishiki achieved this milestone on Day 11, making him the fastest wrestler ever to do so. He becomes only the 7th wrestler (8th overall instance) to achieve a one-tournament Ozeki return, and the first since Takakeisho at the 2019 Kyushu Tournament.

𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬
The 22-year-old Ukrainian native's passion for sumo remains unshakeable. Through an attendant from the Asakayama stable, he received a gift of fabric once belonging to the third-generation Wakanohana directly from Stablemaster Asakayama (former Ozeki Kaio). Aonishiki had it tailored into a yukata that he has been wearing this tournament, proudly asking those around him, "How does it look?"

His mentor, Stablemaster Ajigawa (former Sekiwake Aminishiki), had offered simple encouragement before the bout: "You'll be fine. Just focus." After the win, Ajigawa expressed his relief, emphasizing that his main priority was Aonishiki's health through daily treatment rather than chasing stats or championships.

Regarding a potential hair-pull (mage-tsukami) during the bout, Onoe, the head of the judging committee, clarified that no infraction occurred: "It didn't look like that to us... If anything happened, the video review room would have called."

JSA Chairman Hakkaku commended Aonishiki's mental fortitude:

"He’s not done yet—he needs to stay focused for the rest of the tournament. Being able to win even while dragging an injured leg is essential for staying at the top level. He doesn't make excuses. His mind, technique, and body—especially his spirit—are growing stronger."

After Day 9 saw a tumultuous series of upsets with both Yokozuna and both Ozeki suffering losses, Day 10 brought a resurgence as one Yokozuna and two Ozeki secured victories.

In the final bout of the day, Yokozuna Onosato defeated Daieisho with an abisetaoshi (backward force down) to improve to 6–4.

Ozeki Kirishima, who is currently seeking promotion to Yokozuna, dispatched M3 Hakunofuji with a yorikiri to stay strong at two losses (8–2). Meanwhile, Ozeki Kotozakura, fighting to clear his kadoban status, brought down Komusubi Oho with an uwatehineri, bringing his record back to an even 5–5.

Yokozuna Hoshoryu suffered back-to-back losses. Following his defeat to Yoshinofuji on the previous day, he fell to Sekiwake Aonishiki by uwatenage, dropping to 6–4.

Aonishiki and East Maegashira #7 Kotoeiho maintained their lead at 1 loss each. Shishi fell to two losses, joining a 5-way tie at 8–2 alongside Kirishima, Takayasu, Asanoyama, and Takerufuji.

Makuuchi veteran Takayasu thrust out Tobizaru with a tsukidashi, keeping his record at two losses and securing his first kachi-koshi in six months since the January tournament. Opening with a solid initial charge, Takayasu kept his opponent right in front of him while delivering a quick rhythm of thrusts. Emphasizing cadence over pure power, he left no room for his opponent to counter. "He's a tricky opponent, so I made sure to keep him right in front of me and keep moving forward," Takayasu reflected with a nod.

With Tamawashi dropping to the Juryo division, Takayasu became the oldest wrestler in the top Makuuchi division starting this tournament. He remains just one win behind the youngsters Aonishiki and Kotoeiho, who are leading the championship race with one loss.
