The Maine Motor Transport Association is proud to introduce the John Austin Trucking Foundation —a grant program created to open doors for the next generation of Maine’s trucking industry.
Thanks to the commitment of our members, MMTA is helping to remove financial barriers in the trucking industry by offering eight monthly grants of up to $2,000. These grants ensure that motivated individuals can access the training they need to pursue a rewarding trucking career in Maine.
What does this grant support?
From CDL licenses (Class A & B) to endorsements like Hazmat or Tanker, as well as technician and other trucking-related vocational programs, these funds are dedicated to building the skills that keep Maine moving.
Why we do this:
Our members know that trucking drives the Maine economy. They know that when we invest in people—future drivers, technicians, and support professionals—we’re investing in the health and future of Maine's entire industry.
Applications are due by 5 PM on the last business day of each month, and up to 8 grants are awarded every month.

We’re proud to share that the Go. Your Way. Career Exploration Trailer is officially under construction—and on track to arrive in early April.
First announced at our Annual Banquet in January, this project marks a big step forward in helping students explore real-world careers in Maine’s trucking industry.
Inside the trailer:
A full-scale commercial driving simulator
VR experiences for semi-truck and forklift operation
A diesel technician skills game
Career awareness materials
Bringing it all on the road:
The trailer will be pulled by our fully branded Career Exploration Truck, designed to turn heads and represent the strength of Maine’s trucking community.
A big thank you to O'Connor Auto Park and HO Bouchard for their support in getting us rolling.
We’ll be taking the trailer to schools, job fairs, member safety days, and public events across the state.
We’re currently looking to book events starting in early June.
If you know a school or event that would benefit from a visit, reach out to Derek at [email protected].
We’ll continue to share updates as the build comes together.
Thank you to all of our members for being part of this effort to move the industry forward.

MMTA has been busy over the past two days. We had the opportunity to give two presentations to our members and answer their questions as it related to the trucking industry.
The first presentation, titled “Qualifying Drivers with an Eye Toward Safety,” took place yesterday at the Maine Health and Safety Conference in Augusta. This session outlined how to qualify drivers under the FMCSA regulations for both CDL and non-CDL commercial vehicle operators.
The second presentation was an in-depth Drug and Alcohol training for DOT supervisors. Supervisors were shown how to identify symptoms of substance use and were given guidance on how to properly respond if substance use was ever suspected in the workplace.

Big thank you for everyone that attended our emissions training today!
We covered important topics like hazards, policies, and standards regarding emissions. The class also got hands-on experience diagnosing vehicle issues and testing different fluids for contaminants or quality.
This class and more are hosted regularly at the MMTA office in Augusta. If you are interested in attending future classes, please remember to register online to save your seat!

MMTA would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who joined our membership meeting yesterday morning! Special thanks to Scott Valcourt from the Roux Institute for his insightful presentation on engaging Maine partners through data analytics, and to Kirk Ross, project manager for Sappi North America, for his excellent presentation on the investments they are making in their Somerset mill. Our meeting highlighted important industry updates, including the rising energy costs for industrial users. This provided excellent opportunity for members to have an open discussion about industry topics and stay up to date on current issues.
A shout-out to Maine Commercial Tire for sponsoring a delicious breakfast to kick off the meeting! We look forward to continuing these vital conversations for Maine’s Transportation industry.
