The #SupremeCourtofIndia asks for quick constitution of District Committees across the country to improve #prison infrastructure and to assess plans to ease #overcrowding.

IJR's analysis puts overcrowding at 131% at the end of 2022, up from 130% in 2021. #Undertrials make up the bulk of the prison populations - 77%; and convicts only 23%.

The SC issued these orders in the aptly named Re Inhuman Conditions in 1382 Prisons matter but with few responses coming in from states to earlier such proddings, the likelihood of moving from ‘inhuman conditions’ to prisons becoming spaces for #rehabilitation and #reintegration into society seems far away.
