The irony of “Kill the polytheists wherever you find them” and “Kill whoever changes his religion” is that if either injunction was ever taken at face value there would be no non-Muslims alive today after a near millennium and a half of Muslim existence, preaching, and rule. Why didn’t Muslims who ruled the lands they conquered as minorities not slaughter their non-Muslim subjects immediately? Why did Muslims accommodate the religious freedom of Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, and others? And if Muslims were expected to kill all apostates, regardless of the reasons of their apostasy, why do so many Muslims today whose ancient ancestors were not Muslims when Muslims invaded not revert back to their ancestral religions? This is in response to those who say “Islam” was spread by the sword and that the people Muslims conquered were forced to convert. Why are those who have actually lost faith in Islam or who abandon basic practices not being killed off?

The reason is that even if one finds scholarly interpretation that says the reason for Jihad is to eliminate unbelief from the world, people are and have always been more than their religions and ideologies. Human nature and culture play a major part in how one embraces scripture. That’s not to mention that textual ambiguity allows for ideological differences. And God knows his creation. It’s also why he calls us to think and use reason, not embrace “everything” uncritically.

I think it would help if Muslims didn’t fall for the “religious” narratives by being hyper defensive or critical of historical religious orthodoxy and interpretation. The reason is that critics will always find a way to say, “But what about scholar X? He said this. That means you’re not taking your religion seriously.” So, even when you respond, “But that’s not the strongest view or not the view that most Muslims today support”, the response reinforces the idea that Muslims can be best understood by their core religious beliefs. So, all one needs to do to understand Muslims is to read what their scripture says.

The exclusive appeal to scripture and scholarly sources hurt Muslims in debate and in interfaith meetings. If all one needs to understand Muslims is knowledge of their scripture, what use is a conversation or debate with a Muslim?

The reality is that we are all influenced by our thoughts, emotions, appetites, experiences, and environments. And all that goes into our reading of scripture and the particular verses we develop a strong affinity with. Rather than debating the proper interpretation of scripture, it might be better to underscore the human attributes/frailties we share with non-Muslims and that the history of Islam nor its present validate the claims of the critic.

Polling Muslims about their positive views on democracy doesn’t prove that Islam is not a potential menace to the West. And while it does provide evidence of Muslim embrace of secular governance, it simply provides an opportunity for critics to say that “Muslims don’t know their religion, are not showing proper commitment, and must me doing taqiyyah to hide their true beliefs.”

The grooming gang matter is the easiest to address. Simply ask what evidence from Muslim scripture permits and endorses grooming and grooming gangs? This is because the claim is that this is what makes “Islam” dangerous. If they want to make an immigration argument, let them do so.

Imam Al Bouti on the Alawis/Nusayris

Please read/watch carefully and slowly before lashing out with reckless slanders against either the Martyred Imam or myself (the admin).

With regard to this group, Hafez Al Assad attempted to secularize them after coming to power in order to gain political favor with Shia states like Iran (it is known that the Shia takfir the Alawis). Many Alawis in Syria today are secular people who are totally ignorant on religious matters, see the link below from @LoverOfAwliya:

Hafez asked to send groups of these young Alawis/Nusayris students from the Jabal Al Alawiyyin to Damascus to learn Sunni theology under Imam Al Bouti, and Imam Al Bouti took advantage of this to teach them Sunni theology.

As one can see from this interview (full link available in Telegram in the bio and below), Imam Al Bouti NEVER accepted the kufr of the Nusayris, he even condemned their kufr in public several times (see Telegram link). He was trying to preach and teach Sunni theology to them, just as any Islamic preacher tries to teach Sunni theology to other misguided/ignorant individuals.

Very few Sunnis or Salafis give dawah to the Nusayris/Alawis, as most simply believe they should all be left alone/ignored or mass executed.

Related to this topic, Sheikh Abdulqadir Al Hussein released a video (again, see Telegram link) recently on the Alawi/Nusayri sect.

If someone with a Sunni or Salafi mindset wants to believe that all of the Nusayris in Syria should be mass executed or just ignored, then that is that person’s opinion. Anyone can hold whatever opinion they want to hold.

Sheikh Abdulqadir and others believe in giving dawah to them, and giving dawah to them is not haram or kufr.
