One month later, it still feels special to reflect on @dsa_org Summer school.

Ten years ago, I was that Master’s student, learning and discovering many techniques for the first time.

This year, it was an honour to serve as Program Chair, working alongside a dedicated team to bring such a colourful event to life. It has been especially rewarding to see the posts, reflections and comments from an event we truly enjoyed organising!

What does DSA at 10 teach us?

I had the opportunity to chair a very engaging panel on “The Future of Careers and Work in the AI Era.” Two things particularly stood out for me:

1. AI is changing careers, but our greatest advantage will be our ability to adapt. Beyond technical skills, the future will require continuous learning, creativity, interdisciplinary thinking and, importantly, the ability to apply AI to real problems in our communities.

2. Africa’s AI future will be stronger if we grow together. We need to deliberately create and share opportunities across our networks, institutions and countries, especially through scholarships, visiting and exchange programmes, mentorship, research collaborations and opportunities for young researchers.

Ten years of DSA is a reminder of what a strong African community can achieve when we learn together, create opportunities for one another and grow together.

Happening Now: The Management Innovation Challenge 2026!

The Management Innovation Challenge is a 3-day high-intensity experiential sprint where structured management thinking meets creative experimentation, organised by @UMIUganda and @miic_ug in collaboration with @ufzepa.

Cross-functional teams of emerging managers and innovators are tackling real-world Management challenges submitted by industry and government partners, applying human-centered design, systems thinking, digital tools, and rapid prototyping to develop practical, data-driven solutions.

Throughout the 3- days,the Makerere Innovation and Incubation Center will be supporting participants through ideation, business modelling, design thinking, and prototyping as they transform challenges into innovative solutions not only for the anchor partners of this challenge but also for other organisations with similar Management challenges.

During the Management Innovation Challenge, our Programs and Mentorship Officer, @MugadyaCol46611, takes participants through Problem Tree Analysis, a tool that helps teams move beyond the symptoms of a challenge to uncover its root causes and understand its wider effects.

By mapping the core problem, its underlying causes, and resulting effects, participants are gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges they are innovating around.

The exercise helps teams to:
• Identify the root causes behind the challenges they are addressing.
• Distinguish between the actual problem and its symptoms.
• Understand the factors contributing to a challenge.
• Identify opportunities for targeted and innovative interventions.
• Develop solutions that address underlying needs and create lasting impact.

Day 2: #ManagementInnovationChallenge 2026

The focus of Day 2 will be on turning the challenges identified into potential solutions.

Participants will continue working in cross-functional teams to develop innovative responses to existing challenges identified by industry and government partners.

Focus areas:
1. Ideation- Led by @MugadyaCol46611, Programs and Mentorship Officer at MIIC, participants will use brainstorming, brainwriting and “How Might We” questions to generate multiple solution options.

2. Prototyping- Led by @RNkuutu, Product Development Officer at MIIC, teams will turn selected ideas into early prototypes using storyboards, process maps and mock-ups.

3. Testing & Refinement- With guidance from mentors, teams will assess their prototypes, gather feedback, identify gaps and refine their solutions.

4. Prototype Showcase -Teams will present their proposed solutions and early prototypes for peer and mentor feedback.

5. Iteration Planning- Teams will capture feedback and define key assumptions to be tested in the field.

The @Ocular_Project Team went upcountry to four health facilities in Northern Uganda, and the big question was:

"Does our tool actually work for the people who'll be using it?"

The Northern leg took the team to Arua Regional Referral Hospital, Omugo Health Centre IV, BidiBidi Health Centre IV, and Kuliklinga Health Centre III. They sat with clinicians, watched how things worked, and listened to what it would really take for the tool to be adopted.

The Ocular_Project Team went upcountry to four health facilities in Western Uganda, the guiding question was whether our tool holds up in the hands of the people who’ll actually use it?

Region-wide, 18 facilities and 76 health professionals have weighed in, with usability scores above 74%. The Western leg took the team to Mbarara Referral Hospital, Kambuga District Hospital, Kihihi Health Centre IV, Matanda, and Ruhoko Health Centre IV in Ibanda sitting with clinicians, watching workflows, listening to what adoption would really require.
