"What principle could be more basic in a democracy than the principle that everybody's vote counts equally?"
Today in Parliament, there was a debate about Britain's voting system. Here's just a few highlights.
Thank you to @EllieChowns@LisaSmartMP@Euan4Falkirk@sarahjolney1 and the many other MPs who spoke out for change!
New: 20 per cent of the Parliamentary Labour Party (81 MPs) have signed an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill calling for a national commission on electoral reform. Latest signers include Polly Billington, Justin Madders and Zubir Ahmed.
140 MPs cross-party have now signed chair of the APPG for Fair Elections, Alex Sobel's amendment.
(Should be noted that 81 MPs is the nomination threshold needed for Labour MPs to get on the leadership ballot!)
🚂PR is getting closer - but only with your help.
We've hit over 90% of our crowdfunder target with two weeks still to go.
With a new Prime Minister incoming, we have a real opportunity to win a fair voting system.

Whoever replaces Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street needs to hear the message loud and clear:
The UK's democracy is in crisis. A fair, proportional voting system isn't a "nice to have".
It's a priority and we need it now.
The problems with UK politics run deeper than who’s in Number 10.
First Past the Post produces big majorities without real public support, and turns politics into a zero-sum scramble instead of cooperation.
It’s not a system built to deal with the big challenges we face. No wonder it keeps failing.
Keir Starmer was the UK's sixth Prime Minister in a decade. Now we're about to get yet another one.
Please tell us again how the First Past the Post voting system delivers strong and stable governments.
It's official: Andy Burnham has been elected as the new MP for Makerfield.
A longtime advocate for electoral reform, he will join the growing ranks of PR supporters in Parliament.
We'll continue to work with him to get this message heard in Westminster👇
"First Past the Post bakes in a winner-takes-all mentality, where reaching for common ground looks like weakness.
The public gets served up a menu of U-turns by one government, reversals by the next.
It will take cooperation to break through the malaise."

We’ve had four Prime Ministers in five years, and may well be about to have another.
The problem runs deeper than just who is in charge.
The First Past the Post voting system is holding the country back.

"Years of feeling unrepresented by a political system... breeds resentment, and, if left unchecked, severe polarisation."
Makerfield - a former Labour safe seat long ignored by Westminster- is now dominating headlines.

🎙️"So many voters' votes are wasted under First Past the Post... That is leading to a broader lack of trust in politics."
This morning, @LOS_Fisher and Robert Saunders discussed electoral reform on Radio 4.

Today marks 10 years since the murder of Jo Cox.
Her message is as relevant as ever: "we have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.”
We must honour her legacy by building a political culture based on cooperation, dialogue and respect.
We won't forget you, Jo 🕯️
"Britain has entered an era of multi-party politics without building institutions capable of accommodating it."
Our politics has profoundly changed but our voting system is stuck in the past.
It's time to update it.
