Mtavari Arkhi reported yesterday that Nikoloz Garibashvili, the son of Georgian (Russian) Dream leader Irakli Garibashvili, was allegedly asked to leave the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. Shortly after, Nikoloz Garibashvili denied these claims through pro-government propaganda media, stating that he plans to return to Pennsylvania at the start of the next semester.

This story is part of a broader issue. The children of Georgian Dream leaders and regime loyalists continue to benefit from the privileges of living in the United States and European Union countries while their parents actively promote anti-Western rhetoric and policies. During my time studying in the UK this year, I encountered some of them. It was not shocking to learn about them living in expensive neighborhoods, attending elite universities, and enjoying lavish lifestyles, all while their parents undermine democracy and deny these very opportunities to the Georgian people.

The hypocrisy: many Georgian Dream officials have gone to great lengths to ensure their children are born or educated in Western countries. For instance, the illegitimate president of Georgia, a relentless pro-Russian/far-right figure, Mikheil Kavelashvili had his children born in the UK and Switzerland. Maka Botchorishvili, the illegitimate Foreign Minister, enrolled her child at St. Michael College in Brussels. Others, such as Aluda Gudushauri, Beka Odisharia, Gia Volski, Davit Songhulashvili, Avtandil Enukidze, and Anri Okhanashvili, have ensured their children were born in countries like the United States, France, and Germany. Baia Kvitsiani’s child was born in London. And the list goes on.

Just a reminder that the Georgian Dream regime has relentlessly pushed Georgia closer to Russia’s orbit, undermining its European integration, spreading homophobia, and fueling societal divisions. Their actions have led to severe political persecution, including recent crackdowns on peaceful protesters, which resulted in the arrests of nearly 500 people. Over 300 detainees showed signs of physical abuse, and more than 80 required hospitalization.

This level of betrayal, repression, and widespread human rights violations must have tangible consequences. Economic and travel sanctions must be imposed not only on Georgian Dream membership but also on their family members who shamelessly enjoy Western privileges while their parents dismantle democracy in Georgia. The regime’s corruption, political persecution, and assault on fundamental freedoms cannot go unpunished. Children should bear the consequences of their parents’ actions, and parents must be fully aware that their decisions will have a devastating impact on their children’s future.

It’s time to close the doors of opportunity that they exploit: no more Ivy League education for their children. No more luxury shopping sprees in Milan. No more vacations at Lake Como. No more winter getaways in Kent.

These sanctions would send a clear and uncompromising message: actions have consequences. The Georgian people must not stand alone in our fight for democracy, justice, and a European future.
