The Transition : The Problem with Indian Football

The Indian football story started with a lie : the lying about age and it has been costing us for many years, and it will cost us in the future as well.

If a 15 year old kid plays with an Under 13 team, whose actual age is also around 15, both of them will learn according to the Under 13 level, not the 15 year-old level. This is the mental gap we are facing.

Why did this happen? Because of the lack of grassroots structure.

Suppose there is a talented kid, we need to identify him from the age of 6. But when academies find them at the age of 9, the child tells the academy that he is 6 years old, and for Northeast boys from the hills, it’s easy because of the structure.

Second, suppose a player performs well in under age tournaments. Then he needs a transition period.

There are many clubs in the world whose business model is developing and selling players.

They don’t want to win trophies; instead, they want their players to show their capability.

In India, we probably have only one football club that runs on that philosophy, a club from Punjab. Their model is to develop players and sell them at a profitable price.

Because of this model, the club doesn’t hesitate to give younger players a platform.

However, in the case of others, they may end up in a lower position by the end of the season, but they will play with an aggressive squad that looks strong on paper.

So, the coaches hesitate to give young players a chance.

If you see Barcelona academy players and small children playing in Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam, or Bengal, there is not much difference in quality.

Yes, there is a difference in playing style, but when the time comes for the transition, our Indian kids are warming the bench.
