One of the Maunakea silverswords (ʻāhinahina, Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. sandwicense) near the @MaunakeaVIS has started to bloom! A silversword blooms only once, at the end of its life. This can take 20 to 100 years, so it is special to catch one in bloom.

The quick-changing weather on #Maunakea can make it difficult to plan field work. These four photos were taken in quick succession (within minutes) from the same spot at about 12,250ft. Shortly afterward, it began to hail and our crew had to head back down.

Though not listed as endangered, Maunakea dubautia (Dubautia arborea), also known as Kupaoa or Naʻenaʻe, is pretty rare within our management area. We were excited to see this one in bloom! #NativePlant#Maunakea
Though cute, non-native birds like these chukars (Alectoris chukar) compete with native birds for resources and can act as an attractive food base for bird- and egg-eating predators like cats, rats, and mongoose, which then end up preying on native species as well.
UH is asking the public to provide feedback on the Comprehensive Management Plan 2022 Supplement: Management Action Updates, part of the management framework approved by BLNR for Maunakea lands managed by UH. Comments can be made directly on the draft at https://t.co/Ianqpp3zJr
The #Māmane woodlands once stretched from sea level on the leeward side of #Maunakea to the subalpine ecosystem, but they have been greatly reduced due to habitat alteration and uncontrolled grazing by feral cattle, sheep including mouflon sheep, and goats.
