Some mantras for political thinking:
Truth is hard.
Humility is hard.
Independent thinking is hard.
Resisting tribalism is hard.
Over and over, you will forget that these things are hard, and that's probably when you'll fail at them.

At the end of the day, isn't the gift of self love the goal? I wrote an novel about a young boy's entaglements with this very issue. DM me your address and I'll send you a copy.
@jarvisdeberry Race hustlers are, everyday, shoving down our throats what it means to be black, what being black looks like, what it is and what it is not. Dark skin alone is not enough to protect a black person from this rhetoric,
@malcolmhansen If he doesn't say he's black, the NFL shouldn't. Given that, I don't know if he should even be called a minority (curious what you think) but the NFL labels him so. My issue's with them; I wouldn't be surprised if it cynically labels him Black in defending itself against Flores.
Which is a long way of saying that, in my opinion, Mike McDaniel gets to be whatever he wants to be. If we all stop beating him up about what he looks like, who knows, maybe he'll come around.
@jarvisdeberry Right now, I'm less interested in the NFL than I am in you. What, in *your* opinion, *should* the NFL "list" him as, and to what extent would that address the grievances listed in Flores' lawsuit? You are the Opinion writer, after all.
@malcolmhansen Ha! at you thinking I'm provoked. As the column notes, I'm not upset at his self-description; column & tweet ask if NFL will count him as Black, esp. as Flores' lawsuit proceeds. In the context of that litigation, do you think the NFL is above listing McDaniel as Black?
If you stand accused of not hiring enough Black men, then you hire a Black man who doesn't look like a Black man and won't say he's a Black man, did you hire a Black man? https://t.co/EZDn3NYbGE
