"...that politicians [...] simply don’t have hot sports takes to offer, because they aren’t actually fans. But if you can’t relate to something that resonates so strongly with people, then you need to reevaluate your role as a politician in an electoral democracy."
Politicians need as much attention as possible, as frequently as possible, while seeming as relatable as possible—and a cheat code exists to hit all three objectives, @natfrum writes: https://t.co/F3bBS5izio

Arsenal fans sing “feed the Scousers” and Everton put Fans Supporting Foodbanks’ logo on the screen straight away. Quality from Everton. Absolutely embarrassing from the Arsenal fans singing it.

🗣️ "I saw so many people leave the stadium, I felt pretty alone at that moment. We decide when it is over. Between 82 and 94 minutes, you can score eight goals if you want but you have to work for it."

Greece's migration minister is planning to deregister NGOs that litigate against government decisions, e.g. going to court against asylum rejections or detention orders.
That would practically prohibit NGOs receiving public funds from providing legal aid to asylum seekers.
Greece should seriously invest in the development of heavy-lift firefighting drones that could also operate at night. Meanwhile, solidarity with our underpaid, overworked firefighters who are out there saving homes and lives. #φωτια
Police unions shared evidence of how Greece's government implements its suspension of the right to asylum in Crete.
Migrants spent 35 hours in a ship area without ventilation with temperatures exceeding 43°C. Things got so bad, a door was opened mid-voyage to let some air in.
Greece's development minister said the "firm will of our Government is that you can only enter Greece legally, as is the case in all serious countries"
Greek governments often pretend their laws bring us in line with Europe – when in fact they are taking us further away from it.
Yesterday, Greece’s Prime Minister announced a 90-day suspension of asylum rights for anyone arriving by boat from North Africa. With 9,500 crossings to Crete this year alone, the government calls it responding to an “invasion.” A few thoughts: (1/5)
The real question is what happens on day 91.
Egypt represents 16.4% of asylum applications with only 1.8% recognition rates. A functioning bilateral agreement expanding legal labor pathways would do more than this amendment to prevent boats. (4/5)
Turns out that the PM got it wrong, they are suspending the right of arrivals from North Africa to apply for asylum altogether.
The law also provides for returns to the country of departure or origin without registration. Not sure how they imagine that could work.
Greece's PM Mitsotakis announced a freeze on asylum claims from those arriving from Africa by boat for 90 days. New arrivals will be detained.
His gov't suspended the right to apply for asylum in 2020, drawing EU criticism. Now, they are only suspending the processing of claims.
