At approximately 7:30 am on Saturday, @MalibuSAR, @LACOFD, @CHPWestValley and @McCormick_EMS responded to a vehicle 300 feet over the side of Mulholland Highway in #Malibu. The male driver was outside the vehicle yelling for help, while the female passenger was pinned inside the
โAlways expect the unexpectedโ. The mantra drilled into our heads during trainings. Today, a search for a missing person in #Agoura resulted in our team being alerted to a different person who was injured over the side in a concrete water channel right off the 101 Freeway.
@MalibuSAR rescuers notified @LACOFD and @CHPWestValley while rescuers began a technical rescue to reach the 26 year old male. The man, who suffered back and wrist injuries, was stabilized by SAR personnel and fire medics before he was raised in a rescue basket to the freeway.
Deputy Vargas is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and extended family.

The Los Angeles County Sheriffโs Department mourns the loss of Deputy Levi Vargas, who passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the age of 30.
Deputy Vargas joined the Department in 2015 as a Custody Assistant and later graduated from Academy Class 413. He served in several
assignments throughout his career, most recently at San Dimas Station. He was known among his colleagues and friends for his professionalism, commitment, and compassion to our communities.
His loss is deeply felt across our Department, and he will be greatly missed.
