For A’TIN who may not understand Japanese, I wanted to share a detailed summary of 白石ひでのり (Shiraishi Hidenori/Noriyuki)-san’s recent video, 「ありがとう。SB19 A’TIN」, because I thought his message deserved to reach more people — and hopefully SB19 themselves.

Important note: I do not speak Japanese, so I used translation apps to understand the video. This is my best understanding of what Shiraishi-san shared, rather than a word-for-word translation. If any Japanese-speaking A’TIN notice that I misunderstood something, please feel free to correct me. 🙏

Shiraishi-san is a Japanese musician who previously worked in music production and now works as a freelance musician while also working in caregiving. He recently discovered SB19 through their performances and connection with BE:FIRST and has been posting reaction videos as he explores their music.

This particular video was different. It wasn’t really a reaction video. It felt more like a personal message of gratitude to SB19 and A’TIN.

He began by talking about his previous reaction to an emotional live performance of MAPA. During that performance, a family member of one of the members appeared, and because of comments and/or translation, he initially understood that the people involved were the member’s parents. He later learned that his understanding was incorrect and that the family member was actually a younger sister who lived far away.

He wanted to clarify that, but he also explained something much more important:

The reason he cried so much during that performance was not simply because of the family surprise.

What affected him deeply was the member’s completely unguarded emotional reaction — becoming so overwhelmed that his legs seemed to give way — along with the obvious affection among the members and Stell’s words toward the end.

What Shiraishi-san saw in that moment was something very genuine: love, sincerity and purity.

And that led him to share something very personal about himself.

He explained that he is actually someone who cries easily because of movies and music. He even mentioned going alone to see Spider-Man and crying several times. But when it comes to difficult events in his own life, his response is very different.

Because he is highly sensitive, he described learning to emotionally shut things away — almost like putting his feelings into a drawer — because otherwise carrying everything becomes too difficult.

His work in caregiving has also placed him very close to death. In that environment, he has to remain calm and professional. He cannot allow himself to become overwhelmed every time he experiences loss, so he has learned how to separate himself from those emotions and continue doing what needs to be done.

He then spoke about losses within his own family.

Around two years ago, his mother passed away. His biological father, whom he had never met, also passed away around roughly the same period. He mentioned a sister with whom he communicates by email although they do not live together, and he spoke about changes involving his family home and his adoptive father. Now, at around 47 years old, he finds himself thinking about age, family, loss and where he is in his own life.

This is where his discovery of SB19 became unexpectedly meaningful.

He said that watching SB19 — particularly that emotional MAPA performance — somehow gave him an opportunity to reconsider things he had pushed away and to feel again.

That seemed to surprise him.

Here he was, at this stage of his life, being emotionally affected by five artists from another country whom he had only recently discovered.

And perhaps, he reflected, the fact that they are from another country made it easier in some way. There was enough distance for his own emotions to relax, allowing something he had kept closed to begin opening again.

In that sense, SB19’s music and performances had, in his words as I understood them through translation, “saved” him in some way. (Continued)

Never nilang dinungisan ang reputasyon ng Filipino singers by letting just one member plus an overpowering backtrack carry the vocals. Every Filipino singer worth their salt should be able to SING LIVE and RAW. Yan ang talent ng Pilipino na dapat ipinapakita sa mundo. Hindi yung 10% lang ang volume ng mic, pwera sa least horrible singer, tapos halos hindi na marinig ang totoong boses ng majority ng members. NEVER DINAYA NG BOYS ANG AUDIENCE NILA.

Kaya kung hindi kaya ng idols ninyo ang mag perform ng ganun, ’wag na mangapit-bahay at mag comment sa vocals ng boys. 😭

Nakakaawa lang na your idols are nowhere near the level of vocal talent of our boys tapos makikisawsaw kayo sa usapang vocals... kaya nagmumukha tuloy kayong shunga 🤧
