@urlofcork Also 1979 Leaving Cert. I was offered a place in a new course in TCD in 'Advanced Computer Programming'. I told my dad with the confidence of a 17-year-old that "everyone knows there's no future in IT..."

@malonebarry I watched an ABBA tribute band at an outdoor concert in Belfast. It was freezing and they lost the audience. Not a great memory. But not long afterwards the great David Byrne performed in Belfast and the new century became good.
@Rainmaker1973 On the same day, Giant Haystacks was at the BBC in Belfast for an interview. I was a young producer and shared a lift with him. He was truly enormous, a wild looking man. I avoided eye contact and remember his rasping breathing. The lift struggled...
@ukboomers This reminds me of our childhood dentist in Kildare, Ireland. He used to put liquid mercury on a mirror and the kids would play with it, before it was fashioned into mercury fillings. Never did me any harm. Still have them.
@ciaragemmam@IrishRail I agree. A full fare flexible ticket should be just that, flexible. @Irishrail is selling semi-flexible and marketing them as flexible. Directing people to T&Cs in this context is disingenuous. Recommend they have three tiers: flexible, semi-flex and fixed. It's not hard.

@HugginsComedy Sorry to hear this Andy and wishing you a speedy recovery. When your bones are healed, you should come to Ireland. Your humour would go down a storm here.
@leinsleadernews Pleased to see that the good people of Clane are getting this facility upgrade, but €239,040 does seem like a vast amount of money. What does this buy? Anyone?
@PaulClark_UTV@Tracybelfast1 Great pic Paul and best wishes to David from another David. Have great memories of working with you in BBC NI back in the 80s. V best DM
While France, Germany, Croatia, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands are moving towards variations on a voluntary system. So why not Ireland? The benefits include greater military security, national pride, a sense of purpose, discipline, and camaraderie.
Is it time for we in Ireland to have a conversation about a form of voluntary military service? Many of our European neighbours already have including Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Greece, Austria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania and Switzerland.
