@BookNerdyqmz@mattyglesias Mine hates it too, and it certainly is no substitute for quality enrichment. My point is the kids who learn from it already tend to “get” math.
@JamesAFurey@JimVolkland …but subjects that involve students developing distinct cognitive skills like literacy, mathematical skills and concepts, writing—those should be taught in small groups of five at least 3x per week. Then you can have whole group activities that bring kids together.
@JamesAFurey@JimVolkland I do think it can work in some subject areas where the work can truly be done at different levels, in different modalities. Social studies is an example. And it is very important that kids with different ability levels experience social integration
A lot of teacher twitter seems to be people emphatically restating ED Hirsch’s ideas as gospel, and I find that weird and boring and infuriating all at the same time
It’s only week one of school and already the coercive foundation of school is throwing serious hurdles in the way of building trust with young teens. I remember an old boss saying, “Compulsory education doesn’t work.” There need to be more models for human development.
@stacey_hetrick@smorrisey One time an admin said to me in front of a room full of my colleagues: “I know everything you know and then some.” It was the most unsettling feeling. My being your knowledge peer is threatening? Why?
@smorrisey It helps when administrators come from the effective teachers pool—-they lived the reality of the classroom and figured out how to succeed in teaching responsibly. It’s almost like people don’t want schools to change at all, when they hire admin who have never taught.
Still one of my top films/docs for teachers of any level, experience to watch, lots to reflect upon once invited to this grade 4 classroom. https://t.co/TF08pcJm23
@tressiemcphd Can verify that this works wonders. I’m a special teacher too and I frequently use this with my very loquacious partner. Some people don’t have any felt sense of how much information a listener can take in at one time.
@tressiemcphd Yes—-especially those of us who went to film school in the nineties when you had to learn recording sound on tape, then transferring to magnetic tape, then syncing it up with a filmstrip, all while not cutting your fingers off. Every device had 9,000 parts!
@mshlla @AjayPra44500416 @SouthwestAir Yeah. Rebook. These issues aren’t resolved. They just cancelled our flight out of Orlando. Second cancelled flight on this trip.
@DCBuckeye@SouthwestAir You can get a refund on the flight they cancelled. We did that when they cancelled our connecting flight out of Austin and will be doing it again now that they’ve cancelled our return flight out of Orlando.
Women—particularly women of color—bear a disproportionate burden of the student loan debt crisis.
President Biden can take action now and use his existing legal authority to #CancelStudentDebt.
We won't stop working to get this done.
