Today, surrounded by ranchers and other livestock interests in the Oval Office, President Trump signed an executive order targeting federal protections for gray wolves, including the endangered and critically imperiled Mexican gray wolf.

The order directs the Secretary of the Interior to determine whether wolves meet the legal criteria for removal from the Endangered Species Act list. It does not delist them today, but it begins a process that could remove federal protections and allow expanded lethal management under state law.

During the signing, wolves were portrayed as threats to livestock and pets, as creature to be shot and destroyed. This factually incomplete, deeply one-sided, and ignorant framing did not acknowledge the documented scale of wolf predation relative to other causes of livestock mortality, nor the extreme rarity of wolf attacks on humans, nor the indispensable ecological role wolves play on the landscape we call home.

Wolves are a keystone species and apex predator, crucial to sustaining the health, function, and balance of our ecosystems.

Wolves must not be scapegoated to advance a political agenda.

Their future must be determined by sound science, the law, and the requirements for genuine recovery.

Truthfully, this is a dangerous moment for wolves, wild horses, and wildlife, and we must speak out.
