Visited our local Vishnu Yajna Mandir (বিষ্ণু যজ্ঞ মন্দিৰ) today to check on the magnificent pair of Garudas that I commissioned on behalf of my family. For us Koch Rajbongshi families, offering Garuda statues to Vishnu Yajna Mandirs is more than temple decor — it is an act of punya (merit), rooted in the Shilpa Sastras (Sritatvanidhi, Shilparatna), the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana.

Garuda, the half-eagle, half-human Vahana of Lord Vishnu, sculpted here in Anjali Kara Mudra (folded hands, kneeling posture, right knee bent and left knee touching the ground), represents eternal devotion. When he kneels before Vishnu, he is not just his mount, he is also the first devotee, the eternal guardian of the temple threshold.

For the Koch dynasty, our Kul Devata has always been Madan Mohan — Lord Krishna, the Enchanter of the World, an incarnation of Vishnu himself. He is the Thakur of our people, the Koch Rajbongshis, and his presence has shaped our temples, our armies, and our ancestral memory.

Commissioning Garuda is therefore not a mere gesture. It is a reaffirmation of who we are. It continues a legacy that goes back to the time of Chilarai and Nara Narayan, when the Koch Narayani army carried Lord Vishnu’s banner across the northeast. Many of those nobles and commanders placed Garudas before Vishnu temples, for Garuda embodied both martial swiftness and divine protection — the perfect symbol for a warrior aristocracy bound to dharma.

When I see Garuda in Anjali Kara Mudra before Lord Vishnu today, I do not just see a sculpture. I see memory, loyalty, and faith carved into stone. I see my ancestors, their vows, their battles, their temples … and I feel my own small act of offering joining that unbroken chain.

For me and my family, Garuda here is both cosmic sentinel and personal inheritance. He kneels eternally before Vishnu, but he also stands guard over our history.
