Earlier today, a team from the Water Resources Authority, led by Mr. John Munyao, the WRA Ewaso Ngiro Basin Area Coordinator, along with Mr. Gathima from the WRA Mandera Satellite Office and Dr. Mohamud Eda, CEC Water Services, paid a courtesy call to my office.
They provided a comprehensive briefing on the progress of the Horn of Africa Ground Water for Resilience Program (HoAGW4RP), highlighting stakeholder engagements at Amara Blue Resort, scheduled to conclude on January 18, 2024. The initiative, aimed at benefiting approximately 1.5 million people in Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir, and Mandera counties, encompasses integrated projects focusing on water resource management, water services, and sanitation services.
The workshop's primary objective is to select priority sub-catchment sites for implementing Managed Aquifer Recharge activities, catchment conservation, and livelihood initiatives. Funded by the @WorldBank , the program, coordinated by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, involves the Water Resources Authority as an implementing agency.

Today, I joined 10 ASAL counties in signing an MoU with @WFP for community support in drought response and climate change impacts. Ms. Lauren Landis, WFP Representative, opened the event, setting the tone for collaborative efforts. Ms. Sheila Roquitte, Deputy Mission Director for Kenya Mission, @USAID , highlighted the crucial role of international support. Besides the MoU, we discussed impacts, gaps, and areas of improvement in previous programs to better serve the people.
National government officials, Hon. @harsama_kello PS State Department for ASAL and Regional Department, donors, governors from ASAL counties, county commissioners, national and county government representatives from different sectors were part of the discussion.
This partnership aims to extend beyond emergency relief, transitioning to resilience programs for lasting impact. Grateful for support during the worst drought in 40 years. With the ongoing floods, we need a multi-sectoral approach to help the community recover from a second disaster.
