V D Satheesan was never the obvious choice for Kerala’s next chief minister, except to the voters.
There is a photograph in my head from the Kerala Literature Festival in 2024, of Satheesan standing in the corner of a tent at Kozhikode beach, asking me about a Bulgarian novelist. Read more: https://t.co/wK4oZpf4Dg
'I can explain it only by a weakness of the scholarly mind that I have often observed in myself. I call it theory-induced blindness: once you have accepted a theory and used it as a tool in your thinking, it is extraordinarily difficult to notice its flaws.'- Daniel Kahneman
Through our interactions with BMC engineers over the past 2–3 years, we discovered a fairly intuitive road space distribution formula that was followed by BMC planners during the British era. On roads designed during that period, at least 1/3 of the street space was allocated to footpaths. We have verified this across multiple locations in South Mumbai neighbourhoods.
This rule was diluted when suburban Mumbai was developed, reducing the footpath allocation to just 1/10 of the total road width. As a result, on most streets in suburban Mumbai today, footpaths make up only about 10% of the road space — a standard that BMC continues to follow. Even though the overall roads are wider in Suburban Mumbai, the footpaths on them are so narrow that even two people walking side by side often struggle to move comfortably.
Now you know why walking in suburban Mumbai sucks. Support us to ensure our newly built areas dont follow the same pattern. #WalkingProject
Fun fact. The original Phantom stories were based in Java, then in Bengal, which is why the location was named Bangalla from Bengal, and the Singh pirates were among the main enemies, and Rama Singh killed the 20th Phantom.
Falk wanted British and Indian readers and moved the location to Africa.
When Indrajal comics published them in India Bengalla became Denkali and Rama became Ramulu
While the political directions to Gen Naravane - “Jo uchit samjho, woh karo” (do whatever you deem appropriate) - have garnered much attention, there are many other equally significant bits in the @thecaravanindia February cover story about Naravane's unpublished memoir. 1/N

@flipkartsupport I have already conveyed my concerns on your help/chat everyday for the last 3 days. A very frustrating experience and the support ineffectual, practically a joke. I don't see how a DM here is going to sort it, and even if it did, the whole show has been scarring
Mumbai: Tensions flared at the Dadar Kabutarkhana on Wednesday morning after several members of the Jain community attempted to forcibly remove a cover placed by the BMC to restrict pigeon feeding at the site. The civic body had installed the cover over the weekend following ongoing concerns about public health hazards caused by indiscriminate pigeon feeding. A heavy police bandobast was deployed at the location as dozens of community members, visibly agitated, gathered to protest the move. Several individuals were seen pushing against bamboos errected and trying to lift the plastic sheets and netting covering the central feeding zone. Video by @sanjayhTOI
On June 4, I posted the first of four parts of a longish short story, ‘Ash and Smoke’, on Substack. Usually, I post fiction there long after it has been published in a litmag or an anthology, but I broke the general rule for ‘Ash and Smoke’…
Growing up in the 90s, if you told me the Dhoot's would be mired in one scandal after another in the future, I'd have laughed, but here we are - https://t.co/UQSMBilR0m
One startup figured out how to make the sun shine AT NIGHT.
They're putting mirrors in space to direct sunlight toward the Earth at nighttime 😂
Here's a video of it, plus a thread on why the science is so interesting:
