NASA’s Forgotten 1960s Humanoid
Long before Boston Dynamics,NASA built a hyper-realistic humanoid robot during the Apollo era.
PDAD (Power Driven Articulated Dummy). Built in 1965, this 230-pound mechanical beast was created for one specific mission: to "try on" early space suits so human astronauts didn't have to.
>35 Joints: It perfectly mimicked human movements to test suit flexibility.
>Shape-Shifter: Its height adjusted from 5’5" to 6’2" to match 95% of American males.
>The Goal: Internal sensors measured exactly how much physical force it took to move in a stiff space suit.
NASA poured $175,000 (a fortune back then) into the project. However, the robot had a tragic engineering defect: it constantly leaked oil.
Its complex hydraulic system and nylon "veins" couldn't handle the pressure. Because it kept dripping oil, it could never be allowed near pristine, sterile space gear.
NASA officially axed the project in 1967.
