I grew up in that big hole in the middle - the Central Valley of California - which is America's agricultural heartland. The valley is the size of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined. On its north-south axis, you have to drive seven hours on the freeway to cover its full length. It produces 25% of the nation's food supply and 40% of its fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

And that's not even all of the state's agricultural production. There are huge areas of highly productive farmland outside the Central Valley - Wine Country and the Salinas Valley, for example.
