Yes, every sovereign state has the right to control its borders. But Tanzania is not just any state—it is a member of the East African Community, bound by the EAC Treaty, which it ratified willingly. That treaty enshrines free movement of persons, respect for human rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law under Articles 6 and 7.
Martha Karua was not entering Tanzania to destabilize the state. She was traveling to show solidarity with Tundu Lissu—a fellow EAC citizen facing political persecution. That is not only lawful, it is honourable.
To reduce her action to “just another lawyer” is a shallow insult to both her stature and the principle she represents. This is not about whether Tanzania can deny entry. It’s about whether they should—especially when doing so undermines regional cooperation, tramples on the spirit of solidarity, and silences dissent by intimidation.
Karua is doing what principled leaders do: stand up when it’s inconvenient, speak up when others are silent, and act where cowards pontificate. Kenya needs more of that, not less.
@dkmaraga@TunduALissu Thank You very Much David Maraga,,You are truly Great jurists of our East Africa. Your observance is very recommendable and gives us more hope's.
It was truly inspiring to see my brother, @TunduALissu in high spirits today in Court.
As a fellow member of Jumuiya, I hold firm in the hope that the legal process ahead will be fair, just, and expeditious—reflecting the highest standards of integrity, independence, and respect for human dignity.
Senior Counsel @MarthaKarua, Human Rights Advocate @ngugi_lynn and @LawSocietyofKe council member @gloria_kimani are currently getting deported from Tanzania by @SuluhuSamia oppressive regime. They landed in Tanzania this morning to visit political prisoner @TunduALissu and attend his court hearing tomorrow. CHADEMA chairman and presidential candidate Tundu Lissu was arrested in April and charged with treason, and his party was barred from participating in the general elections happening in October .
Since Suluhu’s took over there has been an increase in extrajudicial killings, serious problems with the independence of the judiciary, and the continued illegal detention of political prisoner. There is serious restrictions on freedom of
expression and media freedom, including unjustified arrests and prosecutions of journalists.
