Absolutely wild how quickly the mental health problems I experienced in graduate school disappeared after I finished my PhD. It's almost as though the pressure, isolation, and financial insecurity of graduate school contributed to their development and maintenance.

This will be a small rant on using MS Word in academic papers, a thread. Yes, I am a LaTeX user, how can you tell?

1.- Numbering equations requires either the use of invisible tables or buying external software like MathType. (1/?)

4.- Coming back to equations, the build-in equation editor is clunky and doesn't provide many tools needed in a lot of areas of science. Thus necessitating the purchase of third party software. (3/?)

Spending 2 weeks to "accelerate" an algorithm to reduce execution time from 6 hours per iteration to 1 hour per iteration might sound like a lot, but total simulation time is still >1 week. Why are we still here, just to suffer?

@ColinVParker @mickeykats I guess it depends on the department and selection committee. In my department, they look at the applications in a big picture way, if a candidate has experience or accolades, a low GRE score is not significant at all.

What approach is most commonly used for internal paper reviews? In my lab, we currently have an unspoken policy of getting a review by a peer (either co-author or someone close to the project) and one final review (realistically more) by the PI. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter

@SusannaLHarris UT El Paso PhD in electrical engineering. I make $19k a year before taxes. Tuition and fees are included depending on the project you're getting paid out of. Lucky enough to have a fellowship cover for that, though.
