Dear med students:
Hold the hand of the patient who needs you. Sit down. Lean in. Be present. Trust your instincts, even when those around you don't understand or respond in the same way.
This skill may have been trained out of them years ago, but hold onto it with both hands.
It's easy to dismiss pain when it's not your own.
It's easy to label, to turn away.
It’s harder to stay human.
But that's the real work. And it's the only work that matters.
Sleep deprivation affects empathy:
MRI scans show that after a night of no sleep, people have far less activity in the empathy areas of the brain. Doctors low on sleep have been shown to have less empathy for a patient’s pain and are less likely to prescribe medication.
