Renowned Malawian 🇲🇼 shoemaker Chimwemwe Mwenyemasi has signed a distribution agreement with South African retail chain PEP to sell his footwear across Africa.

Although he was offered a work permit to operate in South Africa, he chose to manufacture the shoes in Malawi to create local jobs and help the country earn foreign exchange.

The agreement follows his return from extensive footwear training in several African countries, where he improved his skills before securing the regional retail partnership.

The move is expected to reduce transport costs and ease truck congestion for one of Africa’s fastest-growing mining industries.

The country is seeking to build a more efficient battery minerals supply chain as Chinese🇨🇳 investment continues to expand.

I admit I have travelled a fair bit, and I have never felt any need for in-flight entertainment especially on a red-eye flight. In fact, I struggle to think of anyone in my circle who actively uses it on any journey. I think we have allowed the pursuit of perfection to overshadow the practicality of progress. A direct flight saves time, removes the inconvenience of connections and gets people home faster. Those benefits matter far more to me than whether the aircraft has a catalogue of old films.

There seems to be confusion surrounding the Air Zimbabwe & the Plus Ultra Lineas Aereas wet lease deal for the Harare - London route. It is also sad that most of the ignorance is being politicised just to criticize the move, but this criticism from the political circles appears to stem from ignorance of the matter.

A wet lease in Aviation is standard procedure & under it, one airline leases from another airline the aircraft, crew, maintenance & insurance, whilst the leasee (Air Zimbabwe) takes care of ticket sales, passenger services & commercial operation of the route.

It is a wise move in the sense that the national carrier has not serviced this route in over 14 years, & it's necessary to try it out first without spending a lot of money risking significant losses, hence a wet lease makes sense because whilst they serve the route & see the viability, they can be processing training of Zimbabwean crew & purchasing of Air Zimbabwe aircraft for the route.

So things like the livery of the aircraft etc are being blown out of proportion, because painting a plane is not cheap & is not like painting a car. To criticize the presence of the Spanish flag colours on the winglets is to miss the point & shows lack of understanding of the aviation business & also just basic business principles.

Transport Minister Felix Mhona says Air Zimbabwe has confirmed 1,479 passenger bookings and more than 30 tonnes of cargo for the restored Harare–London service.
Wednesday's flight will be the airline's first to London since 2011.

📌But why ‘rent’ a plane?

The route will initially operate three times a week using an Airbus A330-300 leased from Spain's Plus Ultra for a 13-month trial, a model widely used in the industry. Leasing also helps Air Zim avoid creditors and safety compliance restrictions that have barred it from flying into the EU/UK since 2017.

📌 But is there demand?

Demand appears strong. Sabre Market Intelligence data shows about 190,000 passengers travelled between Zim and the UK on connecting flights in 2025, up 2% from the previous year.

Research by Airbus last year said London-Harare was “Africa’s most important unserved route”, with enough demand to run six weekly flights each way. A key test will be whether Air Zim can attract enough business class seats, which previously helped sustain the route for the likes of British Airways.

Once, Air Zimbabwe ran 6 weekly Harare-London flights plus charters linking UK to Vic Falls.
