Fighting to ensure Manx students get the Isle of Man government support they need to attend university. Support Manx students. They are our future. #ManxUni
Lawrie Hooper MHK had little sympathy for a Manx student on Twitter recently. He said the system wasn’t broken and that students should just go to the bank and borrow more money.
Drowning students or their families in debt doesn’t seem the right way to go. #EducationForAll
@carl_hawker Sadly many of us can’t afford our education under the government scheme and coming back to the Isle of Man isn’t an option unless we want to work as an accountant or in e gaming (no thanks!)
@trainman1958@LawrieHooper Can’t remember the specifics now but we were debating student funding at the time and he took exception to something we said.
Numbers of Isle of Man students furthering their education is still dropping, a most unwelcome trend. Latest initiative re grants is the beginning of a nod in the right direction, but doesnt address the problems where they actually are.
C+ Must try harder
Was a pleasure to speak again on the topic of funding last week! Progress has been made but there’s still more to be done before the system is truly equitable 🤞🏻
@Lightly2017@Gedpower Big issue for Universities is that they are struggling to fill places so give out unconditionals to try get more students through their doors. Students still work very hard. Unconditional can relieve some of the pressure and be better for their performance and mental health.
Well done @kathshar for speaking up and making #Tynwald pay attention to this important issue despite enormous resistance from @lawriehooper MHK for Ramsey.
Keep going!
Delighted to see this announcement today, a positive step forward! However I’m not done yet, as it appears the rigid eligibility criteria that causes issue for so many remains in place.
Strongly recommend anyone IOM related fills this survey out. Valuable opportunity to give your feedback on the island and rely the issues affecting you straight to the Gov. Took me less than 15 minutes!
The #isleofman government needs to make education accessible for all.
Thanks @allinson_alex for raising this important issue with Mr Cregeen and Mr Hooper.
@lawriehooper promised a consultation on this but broke his word.
@christhomasiom @ManxRepublic @breeshasdad @Lightly2017@daffydowndilly@LawrieHooper Sort of proves my point about robots. The decision was made to offer this small concession to students knowing it would exclude just one small group. Another decision to include them can just as easily be made!
*thanks but i don't need telling what's good financial practice!
@Lightly2017 @breeshasdad @daffydowndilly@christhomasiom@LawrieHooper Thank you! Son graduated with an honours degree in a heavyweight subject that IOM businesses are crying out for.... yet IOMG would rather pay people to come than offer a local student any kind of assistance!
@Fiona31814 @breeshasdad @daffydowndilly@christhomasiom@LawrieHooper Current support is inadequate, not everyone is suited or even wants to go to Uni, but it should be an affordable option for all the families of children who qualify here. Setting parameters of 3 A levels at ‘C’ or above was the only conditional step for funding Gov needed to take
Glad to see that others share the same concerns I have about paid departmental members! Can’t criticise department policy so therefore won’t scrutinise properly or seek necessary change!
