A cobalt mine in Congo where 40,000 children work as slaves. The Democratic Republic of Congo is considered the world's richest country in terms of wealth in natural resources. Most of the raw mineral deposits remain untapped and are worth an estimated $24 trillion. These deposits include the world's largest coltan reserves and considerable amounts of cobalt.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo accounts for some two-thirds of the world's cobalt, dwarfing the output of its closest competitors, Australia and Russia.
80% of the DRC's cobalt output is owned by Chinese companies, refined in China, and then sold to battery makers around the world. In addition, up to 2,000 people die from cobalt mining accidents in the DRC every year. Miners also face sexual assault and forced evictions.
Those in the mines face the most salient human rights abuses and exploitations, but risks in this industry are spread across various groups.
