And I watched the whole thing with a translator on.

Because the message was that important to me.

They said he was “un-American.”

They said having him perform was “ridiculous.”

And he SHOWED OUT!

He brought out Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.

He staged a wedding on the field.

He recreated a bodega.

He gave us a whole scene of family and love.

He humanized an entire culture on the world’s biggest stage.

All in his native language.

And he didn’t flinch.

His lyrics were clear messages:

“They want to take the river from me, and the beach too. They want my neighborhood and for my grandma to leave.”

“I should have taken more photos when I had you. Hopefully my loved ones will never move.”

And that last line:

“Ojalá que los míos nunca se muden.”

That’s about families being separated.

Forced to leave.

Displacement.

Yeah, he didn’t chase the mainstream.

He made the mainstream come to him.

He put his family name on his back and told 120 million people exactly who he is.

The resolution:
* rejects calls for Israel's destruction/elimination
* condemns the Hamas-led terror attack on Israel
* reaffirms Israel's right to exist
* recognizing that denying Israel's right to exist is antisemitic
* rejects calls for Israel's destruction/elimination
* recognizes that Jewish people are native to the Land of Israel

Antisemitism is alive on both sides of the isle.

Barbie and Ken have a Jewish History?! Who knew. Here’s some background. Ruth Handler was born to Polish Jewish immigrants in Denver on November 14, 1916. Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Elliot, whom she first met when she was 16 at a B’nai B’rith dance. By 1938, the couple had moved to Los Angeles and got married. It was there that the two founded a company which produced a range of props and toys for Hollywood productions. In 1945, the Handlers teamed up with Matt Matson and founded the toy company Mattel, which is a combination of Matt and Elliot’s names together.

Ruth and Elliot had two children, Barbara and Kenneth. One day, Ruth was observing Barbara playing with paper dolls, pretending they were adults as opposed to babies, which were the only dolls available at the time. This gave Ruth the idea to create an adult doll for children, with outfits and accessories sold separately. And you guessed it, Barbie was named after Ruth’s daughter, Barbara, and Ken after her son, Kenneth. Barbie’s official birthday is March 9, 1959, the day she debuted at the New York Toy Fair. She was later joined by Ken in 1961. Today, Barbie is considered the most popular doll ever produced.

Last night I was privileged to finally see Flaco, the escaped Eurasian Eagle-Owl, as he perched in Central Park's North Woods.

As he scanned the park, ready to begin his nighttime hunt, I was struck by his soulful eyes that have enchanted so many.
