For all of us who were confused about that scene in "Good Will Hunting" when the professor taught Fourier analysis on the board, but assigned an exercise in graph theory at the end of the class.
To all math fans: This is going to be an incredible movie when it comes out. Can't wait!
It's about Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the Fields Medal.
MARYAM: The Mirror and the Map
I don't think we're doomed at all! No more than we were when email came out, and cranks could flood our inboxes with their proofs of Goldbach+RH+FLT (usually all in one 3 page paper...). I've recently gotten a dozen proofs of Collatz, "formalized" in Lean! (Vibe-coded, of course, with an LLM saying it's "fully verified", nevermind that the Lean doesn't compile...)
There is no and will never be any substitute for *understanding*, which is anyway all that math is trying to achieve!
It used to be that, if you wanted to waste your time looking at one of these crank emails, you could tell it wasn't real because it wasn't TeX. Now it'll be beautifully written, with perfect punctuation and grammar, fully TeXed up, and with an accompanying Lean github repo. Now what?
Easy: pick up the phone/zoom and talk to the person (again, only if you really think there's something "there" there). If they don't know what the ideas in the proof are, or can't communicate them to me in a way that makes sense, then thank you and have a nice day...
With all due respect to the great Geoff Hinton, this only demonstrates his fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of mathematics.
No, mathematics isn't a closed system. When people invented numbers, when Descartes built a bridge connecting algebra and geometry, when Grothendieck came up with étale cohomology, they **created** fundamentally new thinking categories that rewired our collective ability to see and intuit the world.
