Satellite records show the Earth has become a greener planet over the last four decades, with CO₂ fertilisation as the primary driver.

NASA’s own 2016 analysis (and follow-ups) put global greening it at 25–50% of vegetated land, showing significant leaf-area increase; 70% of that is tied to rising CO₂. On 2020, NASA set a modern satellite-era record for greenness. Even dry desert margins and drylands (like the Sahel, south of the Sarara Desert) have greened in places.

Many major staple crops have also shown far larger gains since 1960: wheat yields have risen roughly 225%, maize 196% and rice 146%. Total cereal production is up 280% since 1961 while land use grew far less (Our World in Data).

CO₂ fertilisation is a contributor, but the Green Revolution (varieties, fertiliser, irrigation and mechanisation) did much of the heavy lifting.

Commercial greenhouse operators enrich CO₂ to 1,000 to 1,500 ppm, but the optimum sweet spot for is 550 ppm. Typical yield increase are 20–40% for many crops; and tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce can hit the higher end of that range. Every 100 ppm boosts growth by 13–16% (from covariance and meta-analyses).

Much of the Earth's land area is inaccessible for agriculture, so a warming climate could open up these regions. Permanent ice and snow cover 10%, tundra a few percent and the Taiga/Boreal forest around 11–17%. Combined, this represents 25–35% of all the world's land area.

Another measurable benefit from higher crop yield is a sharp decline in famine deaths. These have fallen dramatically in both absolute and per-capita terms since the mid-20th century, even as world population more than doubled. Food production per person has risen, a genuine success (Our World in Data).

A large and lucrative economic industry has grown around the climate crisis agenda. Quality and additionality problems in carbon credits are also well-documented.

Carbon markets operate as a pure wealth-transfer and compliance mechanism, instead of a precision climate tool. There are many examples of credits that have been low-quality or non-additional.

Climate crisis alarmist, Al Gore, established his Generation Investment Management company, which invests heavily in climate-finance and 'natural climate solutions'. He has advocated carbon pricing and markets for years, earning hundreds of millions of dollars.

The planet is greener, plants like the extra CO₂ and produce yields have risen sharply, largely because of that extra CO₂.

The greening phenomenon has been well known since at least 2016, yet it is treated as an inconvenient footnote rather than a central fact.

Premier Smith, I and many Albertans are greatful for your smooth hand and calm reaction throughout this trade catastrophe, and staying out of the childish positions taken by Doug Ford.

As an Albertan, I have serious concerns over the lack of transparency regarding the issues which cratered the tentative deal. Today the NY Times published a detailed account of what transpired that seriously conflicts with the version we hear from Prime Minister Carney. Brief but similar reporting by the WSJ confirms this point. From what I read and hear, the conflict appears entirely manufactured by Ottawa to hide much more serious Canadian internal issues.

First, the claim last week Quebecs Premier that Canadas Supply Management policies were part of Quebecs cultural identity should be of concern to all Albertans. Supply Management is prejudicial to all Albertans. Albertans pay a high cost for Supply managed foods, but get little in return. Alberta farmers outside of the Supply managed sector bear all of rhe farming risk themselves, including global commodity prices. Meanwhile, other Alberta farmers not only receive price protection, but continued increases in their product prices for inflation protection. This whole program is prejudicial to Alberta farmers and their values. It appears protection of this policy is why the deal fell apart.

More concerning is the second issue on why the deal fell apart. Quebecs current French Language laws are offensive to Albertans. All products produced domestically and imported into Canada must conform to the Federal Official Languages Act. Quebecs apparent demand that all products imported to Canada must comply to Quebecs language laws are a clear attempt for Quebec to enforce their Provincial language laws on Albertans and all other Canadians. What right does Quebec have to enshrine its Provincial Law to Alberta and to Canada as a whole? The answer is they have NO right.

So here we find ourselves in a middle of a trade war with the United States, with what appears to be the primary reason to satisfy demands of Quebec. I remind you, that when Alberta backed the Energy East pipeline it was Quebec who said NO for entirely selfish reasons. Now, Albertans will suffer again. Expect further calls from the East to use our oil as leverage to secure these two issues that are prejudicial to Albertans.

Nine thoughts on Alberta after the trade rupture:

1 - What has occurred is an existential threat to Alberta and Canada.

2 - Far too many Canadians still seem convinced that everything will somehow return to normal.

They do not understand what has changed.

3 - Canada is in the process of failing.

We are in FAFO territory.

4 - #AlbertaIndependence is no longer an abstract constitutional argument.

It is becoming a question of economic survival and control over our own future.

5 - The federal government’s actions are unconscionable. If this confrontation continues escalating, the economic and human consequences could be enormous.

6 - Canadians, especially working-class Canadians, are going to bear the consequences through jobs, prices, investment and purchasing power while much of the Laurentian political and institutional elite remains insulated from the damage.

7 - Canada now faces a fundamental question about what the country is actually for.

If a federation cannot protect the economic interests of its constituent regions, cannot maintain stable access to its overwhelmingly largest market, and cannot reconcile profoundly different regional interests, then the legitimacy of the arrangement deserves serious examination.

8 - Alberta must immediately start acting like a jurisdiction responsible for its own survival.

Open direct channels with American governors, legislators, industry and the administration.

Use every lawful power Alberta possesses to defend Alberta’s interests.

The old system is failing. Alberta cannot simply wait for Ottawa to save us.

It’s sink or swim.

9 - Albertans need to prepare for #AlbertaIndependence.

Not someday. Now.

We need to build the institutions, relationships, infrastructure, fiscal strength and public support required for Alberta to determine its own future.

Alberta must be prepared to secure its own future.
