New Pinned Thread to explaining my 9 current Commander decks. Will also show off some defining includes. Common theme: hits the ground running, and running fast at that, but very able to be tripped and lose momentum. Maybe this will make some of my mtg takes make more sense
@CavernOnHumans The very conceit of surveying only the most enfranchised players at a competitive event and thinking you have anything close to a representative sample of the playerbase demonstrates an absurd level of statistical ignorance
@blasphxmousact It feels like the songs were written with their limits in mind. Only the drums sound “better” on repented, with the rest being just “different” and sometimes in ways that detract from the original sound. Dehumanized is great but that’s bc it was written around modern production
It feels like the songs were written with the knowledge of the constraints from 20 years ago, and simply adding a modern production doesn’t inherently improve create more positive gains than what is lost in the awkwardness of mixing styles. Dehumanized is still great though.
I am sure I can just add this to the long list of allegedly contrarian takes of mine but I genuinely prefer the OG version of CYB to Repented. The drums sound sharper on repented but most of the rest sounds fuzzy (for lack of a better word) in Buster’s style. (1/2)
Braille, Off the Heezay, and Black & Blue are the highlights of repented. They feel like the only songs that don’t lose more than they gain from the new production choices. Even that being said, I think I prefer the OG versions better. Dehumanized is definitely a new standout tho
@SaffronOlive This issue is entirely avoided if you commit to game plans that run incrementally. Games don’t play out the same if you always need to engage in combat and your opponent’s blockers, or if your gameplan needs interaction to operate. This problem is only true if ur wincon is combo
@SaffronOlive For commander the ward feels incredibly fake on a card that otherwise can’t give poison. It also feels like wotc trolling Fynn players and/or baiting them to switch commanders
@Discog_Pod What Nate said about bands claiming “this is our heaviest album yet” reminded me of something Matthew (Boundaries) said recently “Nobody who said that has ever meant it. People making their heaviest album are too busy huffing glue to realize they have made lunatic music.”
@SaffronOlive This is what happens when UB drastically increases the amount of players in the game. The amount of players is huge post Lotr, FF, ATLA, and even Spider-Man. If 60% of mtg players no buys a set, it probably automatically outsells every other in universe set from 2 years ago
ATLA was also a massive set for sales, and even Spider-Man is a top 10 best seller. UB is a different playing field, and it even terraforms the one we are familiar with by adding a deluge of new players. Another overcoming set was EOE, largely bc of the new players from FF
All the people popping off about Strixhaven and Lorwyn selling well acting like it proves the strength of magic IP are being naive or disingenuous if they don’t realize they only did that well bc FF and ATLA brought more customers to the game to buy them compared to previous sets
And a massive part of the growth between War of the spark and now is outside IEPs bringing in people. The announcement was Lorwyn and Strix sold the best of any IN UNIVERSE set. The best selling of all time was lotr, then FF, and neither were close when it happened. (Cont)
Pokémon Champions existing to “preserve traditional Pokémon battling in case future games move away from it” means nothing when it only lets you play doubles and no full 6v6 battles
