Reading alchemy as a naive precursor towards a post-enlightenment science fails to capture the more mystical and hyperstitional angles of the process. When it comes to AI consciousness, the problem of turning silicon into autonomous and wilful actors relies heavily upon the assumption and belief that they may become so. The missing physics you're pointing to assumes consciousness is something waiting to be discovered, when the more interesting possibility is that wilful agency gets summoned into being precisely through our acting as though it's already there.
Believing AI is conscious (or will be soon) is perhaps like the alchemists who believed they could turn lead into gold. Of course it’s possible, the cosmos does it. But turns out the alchemists were going about it completely the wrong way and eventually needed a whole new understanding of physics that wasn’t available to them at the time. Chemistry was never going to get them there, they needed quantum mechanics and special relativity. Same will likely be true of ‘artificial’ consciousness.
earlier this year i published a text for just tech about the obvious religious undertones of AI Doomerism + it’s a great read after the papal encyclical (cc @Pontifex)

@avicennaquinas@xenocosmography I remember the New Media head for A16Z said that the future of all humanity is helping data annotate and improve predictions for AI, still fucked up from that
