Today marked a historic milestone as the Simplified Guide of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025 was officially launched.
Developed by the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) with the support of @UraiaTrust and the Denmark Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the guide will make the Act accessible to persons with diverse disabilities across the country—even at the grassroots level. It is one of several accessible formats of the Act that will be produced.
Honourable Senator @CrystalAsige, who played a pivotal role in championing and pushing for the enactment of the Act, reminded us: “If we are not counted, we do not count.” She emphasized the need for a disability survey , noting the discrepancies between the 2009 census (3.5%) and the 2019 census (2.2%). Without accurate data, inclusive planning and service delivery remain difficult.
It was noted that there were 57 drafts before the final Act was enacted. This demonstrates the persistence, collaboration, and resilience of all stakeholders involved.
