I believe the continuously-employed adult life is unnatural.

I suspect that the vast majority of people would benefits from occasional short- and long-term breaks from their work lives and more importantly, their work identities.

I don’t think everyone should follow my path and become an entrepreneur or doing their own pathless thing forever. But I do think most people should look for space in their life to get lost. A season of solitude or exploration. Most people already crave such a thing.

But even if you do find the space to do it, it’s still hard to surrender.

After quitting, I reflexively rejected many of the the replacement identities on offer: venture-backed founder, tech worker, impressive freelancer, “thought leader.” But that didn’t mean I had any idea of what to do instead.

I floundered around the US for about 15 months, taking random gigs, booking random trips, and flaneuring around Boston. I felt out of place.

Finally after 16 months of being self-employed and wandering around the US, I ended up in Taiwan. It was time to wander in the wildnerness.
