We were out in the pouring rain with my team for the Great British Beach Clean, but nothing stopped us and we still collected bags of litter from the beach 🌊🌧️🚮
Examples of paper based artefacts from the Science Museum Group collection I have come across during my work: 1908 diagram of tidal curves, art piece by David Shrigley, 1700s manuscript transcription on a work by Nicolas Flamel, sculptures made by the Royal College of Art.
Great being involved in the fish survey at Langstone Harbour, and helping gather data to contribute to our knowledge of the area, so we can protect it better!
Discovery of the week while doing an intertidal survey in the Bembridge MCZ on the Isle of Wight: this lovely stalked jellyfish hanging on to seagrass ✨

The pulsating, swimming bells of the planktonic siphonophore Muggiaea atlantica. They are buoyed by a golden droplet of oil to help keep the animal afloat at the sea surface where they feed on other plankton. @zeiss_micro
While surfacing from last #OctoOdyssey dive, ROV SuBastian came across what we believe to be a gulper eel that had VERY recently eaten. AKA "Pelican eel" for its ability to expand throat & stomach into a massive balloon-like scoop to swallow up squid or swarm of shrimp. Thoughts?
330 million year old perfection - a wee crinoid ossicle that beautifully highlights their five-fold (pentaradial) symmetry. There’s also a tiny fragment of bryozoan in the bottom right 🖤
The pic shows our tear-down of a disposable vape by the way, that big lozenge in the middle is the lithium battery. 2 million a week sold in the UK. All thrown away.
Found some unusual bones and don’t know where to turn? Hey, we’ve all been there. This pre-printed form on official #stationery suggests the @NHM_London Geology Keeper may have seen one or two pig teeth in his time. Oh, the glamour. #Ephemera#NotAFossil#Palaeontology
Attended a 5ft blue shark (P. glauca) stranding with @BDMLR in Cornwall. I have been on the scene since 9:30am, and it has been continuously stranding itself since then (video next tweet). It is now low tide and have havent seen it in over an hour, so hopefully it’s gone!
The biggest ever bacterium has been discovered in the Caribbean 🦠🏖️
Measuring up to 2cm, Thiomargarita magnifica is a tiny trendsetter. Despite being a bacteria, it keeps its DNA similarly to an animal cell.
